Seeking the Satguru & Caste Barriers
सतगुरु की खोज और सामाजिक वर्जनाएं
In 15th-century Varanasi, the hermitage of Jagadguru Swami Ramanand stood as the preeminent center of devotional realization. Daily recitations and sublime chants of devotion echoed from its stone courtyards.

Yet bound by prevailing orthodox rules, disciples strictly barred lower castes and Muslim weavers from entering the hermitage gates.

Twelve-year-old Kabir, dressed strictly in pure spotless white cotton robes, watched the ashram from a distance, contemplating how to establish the formal Guru-disciple tradition beyond worldly caste barriers.

Kabir knew that Swami Ramanand descended the stone stairs of Panchganga Ghat every day at Brahma Muhurta (3:00 AM) for his sacred bath. He devised a wondrous plan to obtain the Master's grace.

The third watch of the night. In deep silence and cool mist, the steep stone stairs of Panchganga Ghat lay shrouded under the starlit sky.

Dressed in his spotless white cotton dhoti, young Kabir stepped softly down the ancient stone stairs, radiant with total devotion.

Kabir lay completely flat across a wide stone step directly in the path where Swami Ramanand had to step!

In the pitch darkness, the pure white-clothed boy rested peacefully with folded heart, awaiting the holy touch of the Master's feet.

A faint lantern flickered at the top of the stairs. Swami Ramanand, wearing traditional wooden sandals (*Khadau*) and softly chanting, began his daily descent.
The Accidental Touch & The Holy Cry

Immersed in silent meditation, the venerable saint stepped down the dark staircase, unaware that young Kabir lay across the step.

In the darkness, Swami Ramanand's wooden sandal accidentally touched young Kabir's chest. The instant he felt a human body, Swami Ramanand immediately pulled his foot back in shock and remorse!

Heartbroken at having touched a human being with his foot in the pitch dark, the compassionate saint recoiled in distress.

Ram! Ram! O child, forgive me! Rise, my child! Speak Ram! Chant Ram! Ram!

Swami Ramanand continued down into the river for his holy bath, unaware of the boy's identity, but Kabir accepted the command of **'RAM'** from his lips as his eternal Gurumantra.
Next Morning: Visiting the Ashram
अगले दिन आश्रम में आगमन और दीक्षा का प्रमाण
The next morning, young Kabir applied the Vaishnava sandalwood tilak on his forehead, wore a Tulsi mala, and walked to Swami Ramanand's ashram in his spotless white robes.

Pranam Gurudev! I am your disciple whom you initiated on the steps of Panchganga Ghat at Brahma Muhurta today with the holy name of Ram!

I do not recall formal initiation! Was it you who lay across the stone stairs in the dark when my foot touched you?!

Recalling the entire pre-dawn incident and seeing the boy's pure devotion, Swami Ramanand smiled: "Indeed! In truth, you have taken me as your preceptor!"
The Disciples
पंडितों का आक्रोश और आश्रम में सभा
When orthodox scholars saw a Muslim weaver boy wearing Ramanand's sacred Vaishnava tilak and singing 'Ram-Ram', an uproar shook the city.

Enraged pandits and senior disciples stormed Swami Ramanand's ashram, demanding an immediate trial and explanation.

Gurudev! A low-caste weaver is walking the streets with your sacred tilak, claiming you initiated him! This defiles our entire lineage!

To maintain customary dignity, Swami Ramanand sat behind a fine silk curtain and summoned young Kabir before the assembly.

Twelve-year-old Kabir stood in the center of the hall in his spotless white garments, fearless and serene before the shouting mob.
The Secret of Maryada & Ramanand

Gurudev! I have come into this world to teach humanity that liberation is impossible without a Satguru. If I myself did not follow the Maryada of a Guru, the world would ask: 'Even Kabir had no Guru, so why should we?' To establish spiritual Maryada for humanity, I accepted you as my Guru in the world!

Kabir Sahib unveiled the eternal secrets of Satlok, the cosmic trap of Kaal, and the True Word (*Satnam*). Drawing aside the curtain, Swami Ramanand beheld the Supreme Almighty Lord incarnate in young Kabir!

The revered 70-year-old Jagadguru Swami Ramanand bowed low at Kabir Sahib's lotus feet, receiving the true Naam Diksha of Satlok from Kabir Sahib for supreme Moksha! All Varanasi bore witness that Kabir Sahib is the Supreme Light of Truth!
