For the tenth time, Emperor Vikramaditya returned to the eerie cremation grounds, took down the corpse Betal from the Shinshapa tree, and shouldered it in silence.
Listen, O King! Where does the purest summit of moral sacrifice reside? Hear this timeless saga of Madansena and the robber's honor!

In the prosperous city of Vardhamana lived Madansena, the beautiful and virtuous daughter of a wealthy merchant, famed for her unyielding devotion to truth.

Before her marriage was finalized, a wealthy youth named Dharmadatta professed his passionate love for Madansena, pleading that he could not live without her.
Madansena! If you do not accept my love, I shall surrender my life to grief!

To save his life, Madansena gave her solemn word: 'My marriage is already arranged with Samudradatta. But I promise you that on my wedding night, before uniting with my husband, I shall visit you first.'
Take my sacred vow of truth—on my wedding night, I shall come to you first. Have peace until then!

In due course, Madansena was wedded to the noble and honorable merchant Samudradatta amidst grand Vedic celebrations.

On their wedding night, as Samudradatta entered the flower-strewn bridal chamber, Madansena backed away, trembling and weeping bitterly.
My beloved bride! What sorrow brings tears to your eyes on this joyous night?

With folded hands and complete purity of heart, Madansena confessed her solemn pre-marital promise to Dharmadatta: 'My Lord! Grant me permission to fulfill my word of truth, that my soul may remain unblemished!'
My Lord! For the sacred sake of truth, grant me leave to fulfill my solemn promise!

Conquering pride and jealousy, Samudradatta spoke with supreme magnanimity: 'Truth is the foundation of all Dharma. If you have pledged your word, go freely and fulfill your vow!'
A solemn vow of truth must never be broken. Go, noble bride, and return in honor!
The Midnight Forest & The Robber

In the dead of midnight, adorned in heavy gold bridal jewelry and crimson silks, Madansena walked alone through the eerie, shadowed forest road.

Suddenly, a fierce forest robber brandishing a jagged dagger sprang from the shadows, grabbing her arm to seize her gold and violate her honour.
Aha! Where is this golden jewel wandering at midnight?! Surrender your gold and your beauty!

Looking calmly into the criminal's eyes, Madansena pleaded: 'Brother! Do not halt me now. I go to fulfill a sacred vow of truth to Dharmadatta. I swear upon Dharma that I will return to you right here—then you may take my gold and my life!'
I swear on sacred Dharma—I shall return directly to you after fulfilling my vow!

Awestruck by her pure fearless commitment to truth, the hardened criminal's conscience was deeply stirred. Lowering his dagger, he stepped aside.
Your sublime truthfulness has pierced my stony heart! Go safely, noble sister, and fulfill your pledge!

Madansena arrived at Dharmadatta's mansion in the dead of night, standing before him with serene dignity: 'Dharmadatta! In accordance with my solemn vow of truth, I stand before you.'

When Dharmadatta learned that her noble husband had willingly permitted her to come solely to uphold the sanctity of truth, he was overwhelmed with shame and remorse.
Beholding your husband's boundless nobility and your divine truth, all lust has perished from my soul!

Dharmadatta bowed reverently before Madansena with folded hands, embracing her as a sacred sister and sending her back untouched with prayers and blessings.
O noble soul! You are a living goddess of virtue! Return in pure honour to your husband's home!

Thanking him with a pure heart, Madansena turned back into the dark forest to fulfill her second solemn promise to the waiting robber.
The Robber

Madansena returned to the dark banyan tree and spoke to the waiting robber: 'Brother! I have fulfilled my vow. I stand before you as promised—take my gold or my life as you will!'
As promised on my sacred word, I stand before you!

Tears streamed down the robber's face. He refused to touch a single ornament, renounced his life of sin on the spot, and walked ahead with drawn sword to escort her safely back to her husband's door!
Sister! Your truth has cleansed my sinful soul! I shall guard your footsteps all the way home!

Returning home, Madansena recounted the miraculous triumph of Dharma. Samudradatta embraced his radiant, truthful bride with boundless pride and joy.

Three men had displayed extraordinary moral nobility—the husband who permitted her to go, the lover who renounced desire, and the thief who conquered greed and lust.
The Moral Conundrum & Vikram
बेताल का यक्ष-प्रश्न और महाराज विक्रम का अमर निर्णय
Concluding his narrative amidst the haunted midnight mist, Betal leaned into Vikramaditya's ear with the profound question of virtue.
Speak, O King! Among the Husband, the Lover, and the Thief—whose sacrifice was truly the greatest and most extraordinary of all? Answer or your skull shatters!

Emperor Vikramaditya declared: 'The Thief made the greatest and most sublime sacrifice! The husband and the lover were cultured, high-born men bounded by societal honour and family prestige—their conduct aligned with their social upbringing. But the thief lived solely by lawlessness, violence, and robbery! For a hardened criminal in a lonely forest to conquer his inherent greed for gold and lust for a solitary maiden purely out of reverence for Truth is the supreme moral triumph of the human spirit!'
Conquering one's inherent criminal nature to bow before sacred Truth is the pinnacle of noble sacrifice!

The spoken truth shattered the king's vow of silence! With a triumphant laugh, Betal slipped away into mist and flew back to the Shinshapa tree.
Flawless judgment, O King! The thief's transformation is indeed supreme! But your silence is broken—and I fly! Khehehehe!

Alone under the ink-black sky of the moonless night, Emperor Vikramaditya turned back into the haunted forest, fearless and determined to capture the spirit once more.
Escape as you will, Betal—a king never abandons his solemn pledge!
