The Merchant's Daughter & The Condemned Thief
चतुर्दश बेताल: सेठ की कन्या और शूली पर चढ़ा चोर
The Fourteenth Retrieval & The Defiant Thief
चौदहवीं चढ़ाई और शूली की ओर बढ़ता चोर
For the fourteenth time, Emperor Vikramaditya scaled the sinister Shinshapa tree amidst the howling cremation grounds, secured Betal upon his shoulder, and strode forward in unbroken silence.
O King! Your resolve is invincible! Listen now to this mesmerizing tale of unconditional love, destiny's bizarre irony, and the mystery of tears and laughter at the threshold of death!

In the historic city of Ayodhya lived Chandravati, the peerless daughter of the wealthy merchant Ratnadatta. Proud and seeking true fearlessness, she rejected every wealthy and pampered suitor who sought her hand.

One day, a legendary master thief who had daringly looted the royal treasury was captured in heavy iron chains, being marched through the grand avenue toward the public execution stake.

Looking down from her balcony, Chandravati was captivated by the thief's majestic defiance and utter fearlessness in the face of death. In that single transformative heartbeat, she surrendered her soul to him as her chosen husband.
He who walks to his doom with the fearless majesty of a lion is the only man worthy to be my lord!
The Father
पिता का विलाप और राजा का कठोर न्याय
Falling at her father's feet, Chandravati proclaimed that if she could not wed the condemned thief, she would end her own life. The merchant Ratnadatta was plunged into utter despair by her unshakeable vow.
Father! Either save that fearless warrior's life from the stake, or prepare my funeral pyre!

Desperate to save his only daughter, Ratnadatta rushed to the royal court, pouring chests of gold, diamonds, and rubies before the King, pleading for the thief's pardon.
Your Majesty! Take my entire ancestral fortune, but spare this thief's life to preserve the life of my only child!

The King rejected the mountain of gold, declaring that imperial justice and state law could never be corrupted by wealth. The criminal had to pay the ultimate price for his deeds.
Merchant! Royal Dharma is not for sale! This hardened outlaw has ravaged the realm; he must face the stake!

The executioners impaled the thief upon the sharp wooden stake on the desolate execution grounds. Even amidst excruciating bodily agony, the outlaw endured in stoic silence, awaiting the final release of death.
The Midnight Visit & The Mysterious Tears
अमावस की रात और चोर का अश्रु-हास्य
In the pitch-black dead of night, Chandravati arrived fearlessly at the execution ground, adorned in glowing red bridal silks and bridal jewels, carrying a pitcher of cooling water.

Chandravati touched the feet of the dying outlaw, washed his wounds, and offered him water, declaring that she had taken him as her husband and would enter the pyre with him in eternal fidelity.
O noble warrior! My soul has chosen you as my husband! I shall follow you into the realm of the beyond as your faithful wife!

Gazing down upon this radiant maiden and her unconditional, self-sacrificing love, the impaled thief was overcome with overwhelming grief; hot tears streamed down his rugged cheeks as he wept bitterly.

Yet immediately following his tears, a strange, profound smile touched the outlaw's lips and he burst into resonant, philosophical laughter! With that final breath, his head slumped in death.
Ha... ha... ha! O mysterious Fate! How whimsical and incomprehensible are your cosmic plays!
The Sati Pyre & The Divine Blessing
सती की चिता और भगवती दुर्गा का वरदान
Upon her lord's passing, Chandravati had a massive funeral pyre prepared with fragrant sandalwood, lowering the thief's body from the stake for the sacred rites.

Dressed in radiant bridal finery, Chandravati seated herself upon the pyre, holding the thief's head in her lap with serene fearlessness as flames leaped into the night.
O Lord of Fire! Consume this mortal flesh and unite me with my husband in the eternal realms beyond!

Moved by the maiden's boundless love, courage, and supreme devotion, Goddess Durga manifested amidst the flames, transforming the scorching fire into cooling divine radiance!
Beloved daughter! Your selfless devotion and fearless love have conquered my heart! Ask whatever boon your soul desires!

Chandravati prayed: 'Grant life and righteousness to my husband, and bestow noble sons upon my father.' The Goddess blessed them, restoring the thief whole and righteous!
The Irony of Fate & The Midnight Riddle
भाग्य का खेल और श्मशान की पहेली
Redeemed by divine grace, the transformed youth renounced crime forever, living a noble, virtuous life beside his faithful bride, praised by all Ayodhya.

The wheel of Karma and destiny is unfathomable—where worldly wealth and cunning failed, selfless devotion extracted life and redemption from the very jaws of death.

Concluding his wondrous narrative amidst the eerie cremation grounds, Betal leaned into Vikramaditya's ear with the profound psychological enigma.

Betal grinned maliciously, testing the Emperor's insight into the human soul.
Now speak, O King! Why did the dying thief impaled on the stake first weep bitterly in sorrow, and then immediately burst into laughter?!
The Riddle, The Verdict, & The Flight
बेताल का प्रश्न, विक्रम का अमर निर्णय और पलायन
Betal issued his customary lethal warning to the silent Emperor.
What was the true reason behind the dying thief's tears and laughter? Speak the truth, O King, or your skull shatters into dust!

Emperor Vikramaditya declared: 'Behind the dying thief's tears and laughter lay a profound philosophy of human emotion and cosmic destiny!'
The thief first wept because he saw this pure, radiant maiden sacrificing her entire life for a condemned outlaw—yet hanging helpless upon the stake, he had nothing in the world with which to reward or reciprocate her peerless, unconditional love! The unbearable grief of his helplessness and deep gratitude brought tears to his eyes! And he laughed because he was struck by the whimsical irony of Fate (Daiva)—all his life he had committed crimes and stolen riches seeking joy and fortune, earning only the agony of the stake; yet at the final threshold of death, without any scheme or effort, he was gifted the purest, most divine love of a noble maiden! The sublime irony of destiny made him laugh!

The profound truth shattered the King's vow of silence once more! With a resonant cackle, Betal dissolved into emerald mist and flew back into the Shinshapa tree.
Flawless and touching insight, O King! You have pierced the deepest ironies of destiny! But your silence is broken—and I fly! Khehehehe!

Under the ink-black skies of the moonless Amavasya night, undaunted by the horrors of the cremation ground, Emperor Vikramaditya drew his sword and strode back to capture Betal once more.
Betal! Whatever mysteries you weave, I shall unravel them—and fulfill my royal vow to the end!
