The Master Thief & The Fearless Princess
एकोनविंशति बेताल: चतुर चोर और निडर राजकुमारी
The Nineteenth Retrieval & The Shadow of the Citadel
उन्नीसवीं चढ़ाई और उज्जयिनी का चतुर चोर
For the nineteenth time, Emperor Vikramaditya brought down the lifeless corpse of Betal from the sinister Shinshapa tree, hoisting it upon his broad shoulders. Walking through the howling midnight gale, Betal whispered his nineteenth riddle.
Listen, O steadfast King! Hear this stirring chronicle of unmatched courage, dangerous love, and unyielding honor: the saga of the master thief Chandaka and the fearless Princess Shashiprabha!

In the grand metropolis of Ujjayini lived Chandaka, a master thief endowed with extraordinary agility, razor-sharp wit, and mastery over subterranean tunneling and the sixty-four traditional arts.
To relieve corrupt aristocrats of their hoarded gold during a famine is not mere theft—it is the restoration of balance and life to the starving people!

Chandaka never harmed the poor or vulnerable. He raided only the heavily fortified vaults of tyrannical hoarders, distributing grain and silver anonymously across the doorsteps of the destitute under cover of night.
The Citadel Vault Heist & The Treachery
राजकोष में सेंध और विश्वासघात
When famine threatened the lives of thousands, Chandaka pulled off the unthinkable: infiltrating the subterranean vault of the corrupt royal treasurer, disabling ancient lock mechanisms with unmatched skill.

However, a greedy merchant whom Chandaka had trusted to distribute supplies succumbed to royal bribery, selling the master thief's whereabouts to the Captain of the Guards for a pouch of gold.

Dozens of elite royal guards ambushed Chandaka. Though he fought with breathtaking courage and martial finesse, he was ultimately overwhelmed and bound in heavy iron chains.

Brought before King Viradeva's court, Chandaka stood tall and unapologetic. Enraged by the breach of his citadel, the King sentenced the thief to be impaled upon the execution stake at sunrise.
He who dares breach the imperial sanctuary shall meet the executioner's stake at tomorrow's dawn as a warning to all!
The Royal Balcony & The Princess
राजमहल का झरोखा और राजकुमारी का अनुराग
As Chandaka was marched through the imperial avenue toward the subterranean dungeons, not a flicker of terror touched his brow. He walked with regal composure, smiling warmly at the weeping commoners.

From her high marble balcony, King Viradeva's spirited daughter, Princess Shashiprabha, looked down upon the prisoner. Witnessing his unbowed stature and radiant, laughing eyes in the face of death, her heart was struck by profound admiration.
A man who laughs in the very jaws of execution is no petty thief—he possesses the heart of a true hero! I cannot permit such noble valor to perish upon the stake!

Discovering that Chandaka had risked his life solely to feed starving families during the famine, the princess made a daring resolve: she would risk high treason to break into the dungeons and liberate him.

At the stroke of midnight, disguised in the leather tunic and crested helm of an imperial sentinel, Shashiprabha secured the master keys and slipped into the subterranean passages of the palace fortress.

काल-कोठरी में प्रवेश और चोर का स्वाभिमान
Slipping an herbal sleeping draft into the guards' wine, Shashiprabha unlocked the rusted iron gate and stepped into the damp, torchlit cell where Chandaka lay bound.

Removing her iron helmet, the princess revealed her radiant face. Chandaka gasped in astonishment at the sight of the King's own daughter standing before him in the wretched dungeon!
Arise, Chandaka! I have severed your chains and prepared two swiftest stallions at the secret gate. I am ready to flee this kingdom by your side to start a new life!

Chandaka touched the hem of the princess's garments in profound gratitude, yet he gently shook his head, refusing to flee into the night.
Noble Princess! Your divine courage has sanctified my soul. But if I flee with you, the world will brand you as a runaway consort of a criminal, dragging the King's spotless honor into disgrace!

Chandaka calmly slipped the heavy iron shackles back around his wrists. He declared that dying on the stake was an honor compared to the shame of compromising the virtue and reputation of the woman who risked everything for him.
My mortal flesh is fleeting, but your noble honor and the sanctity of your lineage must remain untouched! Return to the palace, Princess!
The King
राज-दरबार में सत्य का प्रकटीकरण और क्षमादान
At dawn, Princess Shashiprabha marched into the grand assembly hall before King Viradeva and his ministers, openly declaring every detail of her nocturnal venture and the thief's peerless nobility.
Father! If someone must be punished for treason, let the blade fall upon me, for I breached the dungeon! But Chandaka refused to escape, choosing death over tainting your royal daughter's honor!

King Viradeva stood up from his golden throne in profound reverence. He realized that the chained fugitive before him possessed greater honor, chivalry, and self-restraint than the wealthiest princes of the realm.

King Viradeva immediately ordered the blacksmiths to shatter Chandaka's chains. Overturning the death sentence, the King offered him a full royal pardon and named him Chief Commander of the Realm!
A man who feared not death and willingly embraced the executioner's stake to shield my daughter's honor deserves not punishment, but the highest honors of my empire!

The capital rejoiced in celebration. Though born among outlaws, Chandaka had proven that true nobility is defined not by birth or caste, but by selfless virtue and steadfast honor.
The Midnight Riddle & King Vikramaditya
शीशम वृक्ष की पहेली और विक्रम का अमर निर्णय
Concluding the gripping saga, Betal leaned close to the Emperor's ear amidst the swirling dust of the cremation grounds and posed his challenge.
Speak, O King of Ujjain! Among the three protagonists, whose nobility was the most extraordinary and arduous—the Princess who risked high treason to save a condemned man, the Thief who refused freedom to preserve the Princess's honor, or the King who pardoned a criminal? If you know the answer yet remain silent, your skull shall burst into a hundred pieces!

Emperor Vikramaditya weighed the psychological and ethical nuances before delivering his infallible judgment.
Hear the truth, Betal! In this trial of virtue, the sacrifice and nobility of the thief Chandaka was unquestionably the highest and most peerless!

"The Princess acted out of passion and empathy; the King acted out of justice and magnanimity. But Chandaka stood upon the very threshold of agonizing death! To hold the keys of life and the love of a royal princess in his hands, yet willingly choose the execution stake solely to preserve the woman's honor from disgrace—that is the summit of supreme selflessness and unblemished nobility!"

The moment the righteous verdict was spoken, the royal vow of silence was broken! Betal let out a shrieking gale of laughter and shot upward like a comet, vanishing into the tangled boughs of the Shinshapa tree!
Flawless judgment, O King! But your spoken words have broken your vow of silence! Catch me if you can at the Shinshapa tree! Khehehehe!

Without wasting a single breath in vexation, Emperor Vikramaditya drew his razor-edged sword and marched resolutely back through the shadows to capture the phantom for the twentieth time!
Flee as you will, Betal! Dharma and steadfast perseverance shall triumph, and my mission will reach its completion!
