The King, the Brahman Youth & The Demon
षोडश बेताल: राजा, ब्राह्मण-युवक और ब्रह्मराक्षस
The Sixteenth Retrieval at Midnight
सोलहवीं चढ़ाई और शिवपुर की गाथा
Under the pitch-black sky of the new moon night, Emperor Vikramaditya retrieved the lifeless corpse of Betal from the ancient Shinshapa tree for the sixteenth time. As the King shouldered the burden in silent vow, Betal whispered with a sardonic grin.
Listen, O steadfast King! If you would witness the true summit of sacrifice and selfless devotion, hear this timeless chronicle of King Chandraprabha of Shivapura and the noble Brahman youth, Jivadhara!

In the prosperous realm of Shivapura, King Chandraprabha ruled with exemplary righteousness. He treated every subject as his own offspring, ensuring no voice went unheard and no injustice unpunished.
The protection and joy of my people are my sole sacred duty. A monarch's life exists only to serve his subjects!

In that very kingdom lived Jivadhara, a brilliant young Brahman youth endowed with mastery of Vedic lore, fearless integrity, and profound devotion to the welfare of the realm.
If this mortal breath may one day serve truth and protect the virtuous, my earthly life will find its supreme fulfillment.
The Royal Hunt & The Cursed Forest
मृगया-अभियान और शापित महावन
One autumn morning, King Chandraprabha rode forth into the deep forests with his swift cavalry and huntsmen for a royal expedition.

Suddenly, an extraordinary golden stag appeared, galloping like the wind toward an uncharted, shadowy expanse of the wilderness. Fascinated, the King spurred his steed in solitary pursuit.
Never has human eye beheld such a radiant creature! I must capture it unharmed!

Galloping deep into the uncharted jungle, the King outdistanced his guards. The forest grew suffocatingly silent; the birds ceased their songs, and a heavy, sinister gloom descended upon the gnarled trees.

Having observed the King riding recklessly ahead, the faithful Jivadhara had tracked the monarch's trail through the dangerous thickets, arriving just as twilight deepened into night.
My Lord! This forbidden forest carries an ancient curse! We must not linger in this desolate place!
The Wrath of Brahma-Rakshasa Jvalamukha
भयानक ब्रह्मराक्षस का प्राकट्य
Suddenly the earth trembled! The heavens turned blood-red as the colossal Brahma-Rakshasa, Jvalamukha—his hair ablaze like burning embers and eyes glowing like molten lava—stepped from the shadows with a deafening roar!
Insolent mortals! Who dares trespass into my cursed domain?! Tonight, my thousand-year hunger shall be sated by your flesh and boiling blood!

Undaunted by the demon's terrifying stature, King Chandraprabha drew his ancestral blade, stepping between the monstrous beast and young Jivadhara.
Demon! I am King Chandraprabha of Shivapura! If blood is what you crave, you must first face my royal blade!

The Rakshasa unleashed a mocking gale of laughter. With a single sweep of his shadow-wreathed hand, mortal weapons turned to ash, proving impervious to conventional steel through ancient occult curses.
Ha ha ha! Royal steel cannot pierce my phantom curse, King! Only a voluntary sacrifice of supreme nobility can appease my ancient torment!

The demon roared his grim condition: 'If one of you willingly surrenders his head and flesh beneath my claws, I shall grant the other free passage; otherwise, both shall be devoured alive in agony!'
The King

Without a heartbeat of hesitation, King Chandraprabha removed his jeweled crown and placed it gently upon the forest floor. His face radiated serene resolve rather than mortal fear.
O Rakshasa! Spare this blameless young Brahman. My royal body and blood are yours to consume. Take me and let him go in peace!

Hearing the monarch's decree, Jivadhara trembled with horror and fell to his knees, clutching the King's feet in desperate protest.
No, my King! This must not be! Your life is the lifeblood of millions! If the sun falls, the entire kingdom will be plunged into ruin and lawlessness!

The King lifted Jivadhara with paternal tenderness, smiling gently under the ominous gloom: 'Noble youth, the highest virtue of a Kshatriya king is to lay down his life so that even a single innocent subject may live.'
If a King cannot shield his own follower from doom, his crown is mere vanity and his throne an instrument of shame!

Stepping directly beneath the demon's towering shadow, the King knelt, closed his eyes in peaceful prayer, and offered his bare neck for the death blow.
The Brahman Youth
जीवधर का महा-त्याग और राक्षस का हृदय-परिवर्तन
Just as the Rakshasa's jagged claws descended, Jivadhara bounded forward like lightning, throwing his own body across the King's shoulders to intercept the lethal strike!
Hold, demon! Feast upon my flesh! The demise of an ordinary scholar harms no one, but if this King lives, tens of thousands will flourish in righteousness!

The demon's monstrous claws froze in mid-air. Across centuries of terrorizing the living, he had never witnessed mortals competing with joyful fervor to surrender their lives for one another!
Astonishing! Inconceivable! You race toward death as if it were a festival of joy! Neither of you possesses the slightest trace of fear or selfishness!

Touched by their sublime selflessness, the demonic darkness in Jvalamukha dissolved. The ancient curse that bound his soul was shattered into brilliant divine radiance!
O glorious King and noble youth! Your peerless sacrifice has cleansed my sins and liberated my soul from this monstrous form! May your names shine eternal across the three worlds!

With blessings showered upon them, the celestial spirit ascended to the heavens. King Chandraprabha embraced the brave youth with tears of boundless love, honoring him above all wealth in the empire.
The Amavasya Riddle & King Vikramaditya
अमावस्या की पहेली और महाराज विक्रम का अमर निर्णय
Bringing the narrative to its climax, Betal grinned amidst the howling winds of the cremation ground and posed his cunning riddle.
Speak, O King of Ujjain! Between King Chandraprabha and the Brahman youth Jivadhara, whose sacrifice was truly greater and more arduous? If you know the truth yet keep your silence, your head shall shatter into a hundred fragments!

King Vikramaditya paused, weighing the subtle depths of Dharma and duty before delivering his unassailable verdict.
Hear the truth, Betal! The sacrifice of the Brahman youth Jivadhara was unquestionably superior and far more extraordinary than that of the King!

"A King receives taxes and enjoys royal prestige specifically to bear the sworn obligation of protecting his subjects. Sacrificing his life is his sworn Rajadharma. But the young Brahman owed no royal debt, held no throne, and had everything to live for—yet he threw himself to the demon purely out of selfless love and unprompted devotion!"

The moment the righteous judgment parted from Vikramaditya's lips, the royal vow of silence was broken! Betal burst into a mocking, piercing cackle and vanished into the stormy heavens, returning to the highest branches of the Shinshapa tree!
Flawless judgment, O King! But your spoken words have broken your vow of silence! Catch me if you can at the Shinshapa tree! Khehehehe!

Without a flicker of frustration, Emperor Vikramaditya drew his razor-sharp sword, adjusted his grip, and marched resolutely back into the pitch-black heart of the cremation grounds to retrieve the spirit once more!
Flee as you will, Betal! Until my sacred vow is fulfilled, no force on earth or ether shall deter my steps!
