The Intricate Knot of Royal Kinship
अष्टादश बेताल: माता-पुत्री और पिता-पुत्र का कुल-बंधन
The Eighteenth Retrieval & The Vindhya Forest
अठारहवीं चढ़ाई और विंध्याचल का रहस्य
For the eighteenth time, Emperor Vikramaditya scaled the tangled branches of the Shinshapa tree, brought down the corpse of Betal, and shouldered it with unwavering determination. As they walked into the midnight mist, Betal began his eighteenth riddle.
Listen, O wise King! Hear this baffling riddle that challenges the very foundations of kinship, law, and lineage: the extraordinary tale of King Chandrasimha, Prince Simhavikrama, and the inverted forest marriages!

Following a sudden, devastating invasion of their kingdom, the widowed Queen Chandravati and her beautiful young daughter, Princess Lavanyavati, escaped through a secret passage, wandering defenseless through the deep Vindhya forest.
Mother! Our delicate feet are bruised by thorns and stones! Where shall two helpless women find refuge in this endless wilderness?

Queen Chandravati embraced her daughter with serene maternal dignity: 'Have faith in Dharma, my child. The Providence that preserved our breath through the siege will surely guide our steps to safety.'
The Royal Hunters & The Forest Footprints
मृगया पर निकले पिता-पुत्र और पदचिह्न
In that same forest, King Chandrasimha of a neighboring realm and his valiant warrior son, Prince Simhavikrama, were out on horseback on a royal hunt.
Look, my son Simhavikrama! In the moist sand near the riverbank lie two distinct, fresh sets of feminine footprints!

Imprinted in the mud were two clear trails of footprints: one set was noticeably large and stately, while the other was exceptionally dainty, tiny, and delicate.

Assuming naturally that the larger footprints belonged to the elder mother and the smaller footprints belonged to the young daughter, King Chandrasimha proposed a lighthearted yet solemn pact.
Son! These surely belong to a mother and daughter. I, being elder, shall wed the owner of the large footprints (the mother), while you shall take the owner of the small, dainty footprints (the daughter) as your bride!

Prince Simhavikrama bowed with filial obedience, accepting his father's royal word. Together, they spurred their stallions along the winding footprint trail.
As you command, Father! Your royal pledge is sacred and shall bind us both!
The Discovery & The Inverted Footprints

Deep within a secluded grove of red Ashoka blossoms, they discovered the two noble ladies resting. Despite their disheveled travel, their regal grace and unblemished nobility shone like jewels.

Yet when the King and Prince inspected their feet, they were struck with sheer amazement! Queen Mother Chandravati naturally possessed exceptionally petite, dainty feet; whereas her tall, statuesque daughter Lavanyavati possessed the larger, stately feet!

By the sacred oath spoken on the riverbank: King Chandrasimha had sworn to marry the owner of the large feet (the daughter Lavanyavati), while Prince Simhavikrama had sworn to marry the owner of the small feet (the mother Chandravati)!
Father! Destiny has turned our words upon their head! Can we truly honor such an inverted oath?!

King Chandrasimha stood tall in Kshatriya virtue: 'A royal vow once uttered before the elements cannot be revoked or altered. We must honor our pledge to the letter!'
Honor is dearer than breath itself! I shall take Princess Lavanyavati as my queen, and you shall wed Queen Chandravati!
The Double Royal Wedding
राजधानी में दोहरे पावन परिणय का उत्सव
In the royal capital, grand festivities were arranged. Amidst Vedic chants and temple bells, King Chandrasimha took Princess Lavanyavati as his Queen Consort.

In that very pavilion, Prince Simhavikrama took Queen Chandravati as his devoted wife, honoring the sacred vow with utmost dignity and joy.

Thus, the father's wife (Lavanyavati) was the biological daughter of the son's wife! And the son's wife (Chandravati) was the biological mother of the father's wife! Despite this intricate web, great harmony reigned in the palace.

In due course of time, both royal marriages flourished with abundant fruit. Queen Lavanyavati bore noble sons and daughters to the King, and Queen Chandravati bore sons and daughters to the Prince!
The Kinship Singularity & The Confounded Scholars
वंशावली का महा-भ्रम और दरबारियों का असमंजस
When the time came to record the imperial genealogies and legal relationships, the royal ministers, Dharmashastra scholars, and genealogists were plunged into total bewilderment!
By the heavens! How do we legally classify the children of the King and the Prince?! They are simultaneously brothers, nephews, maternal uncles, and grandsons to each other!

The young children played merrily together in complete innocent affection, entirely unconcerned that their very existence formed an unprecedented mathematical singularity in the laws of kinship!

Consider the loop: The King's children are maternal uncles to the Prince's children (since their maternal grandmother Chandravati is the Prince's wife) yet also their step-brothers and step-nephews across generations!

Thus, two sets of footprints in the forest sand had woven an unbreakable, infinite loop of kinship that defied singular definition in mortal language!
The Midnight Shinshapa Riddle & King Vikram
शीशम वृक्ष पर अंतिम पहेली और विक्रम का अमर निर्णय
Bringing the narrative to its mind-bending climax, Betal perched near Vikram's ear and shrieked his most intricate conundrum into the midnight gale.
Speak, O Emperor of Ujjain! Here is the supreme test of your intellect: What is the exact, singular kinship relationship between the children of King Chandrasimha and the children of Prince Simhavikrama? If you know the truth yet keep your silence, your skull shall burst into a hundred pieces!

King Vikramaditya smiled with serene majesty, untying the knot of Dharmashastra and relational logic with flawless precision.
Hear the truth, Betal! This relationship cannot be reduced to a single conventional word; it is an irreducible 'dual kinship matrix' where multiple direct relations coexist simultaneously!

"From the maternal lineage: The King's children are maternal uncles (Māma) to the Prince's children, and the Prince's children are their nephews (Bhānjā). Simultaneously from the paternal lineage: they are step-brothers and step-cousins across generations! To force a single title upon this multi-dimensional knot is ignorance; in Dharma, they are united in a sacred double bond of blood and marriage!"

The instant Vikramaditya articulated the flawless resolution, his vow of silence was shattered once more! Betal erupted into a deafening, gleeful shriek of laughter and rocketed into the midnight tempest, perching high within the ancient Shinshapa tree!
Unrivaled intellect, O King! No other mortal mind could have untied that cosmic knot! But your spoken words have freed me! Catch me if you can at the Shinshapa tree! Khehehehe!

Not a single trace of dismay touched Emperor Vikramaditya's noble countenance. Drawing his razor-sharp blade once more, he tightened his belt and strode unflinchingly back into the pitch-black heart of the charnel grounds to retrieve the spirit!
Flee as you might, Betal! Truth is my compass, and my royal vow shall see you carried to the altar of the ascetic Shantisheel!
