The Brahman Boy Who Laughed at Death
विंशति बेताल: मृत्यु-वेदी पर हंसने वाला ब्राह्मण बालक
The Twentieth Retrieval & The Shadow of the Altar
बीसवीं चढ़ाई और वेदी की छाया
For the twentieth time, Emperor Vikramaditya severed the hanging corpse of Betal from the sinister Shinshapa tree and hoisted it upon his bleeding shoulder. As they strode into the howling midnight tempest, Betal began his twentieth enigma—one of the deepest philosophical riddles of the cosmos.
Listen, O steadfast Sovereign! Hear this unforgettable chronicle that lays bare the hollow illusions of human attachment and reveals the supreme secret of the immortal soul: the tale of the little Brahman boy who laughed at the edge of the sacrificial blade!

In ancient days, the prosperous realm of King Chandraprabha was engulfed by a devastating pestilence and relentless famine. Thousands of innocent citizens perished each day, turning the golden city into a realm of wailing ghosts.

When the desperate monarch performed penance at the ancient forest temple of Goddess Chandika, a fierce bloodthirsty Rakshasa manifested, declaring that the plague would cease only if a pure seven-year-old Brahman boy was sacrificed willingly upon the midnight altar!
Only when a Brahman child is offered upon the altar—held down by his own parents and pinned by the King himself—shall my wrath be appeased and your kingdom saved!
The Price of Gold & The Greed of Parents
स्वर्ण का लोभ और माता-पिता का सौदा
King Chandraprabha sent royal heralds across every province, beating war drums: any parents willing to surrender their seven-year-old son for the kingdom's salvation would receive one hundred fertile villages, palaces, and endless chests of gold.

An impoverished Brahman and his wife, consumed by insatiable greed for riches, yielded to temptation. Blinding their conscience, they agreed to sell their radiant, innocent seven-year-old son, Gunakar, to the King for gold!
We have other sons! In exchange for this one child's life, our entire lineage shall live in royal splendor for seven generations!

Young Gunakar was a child of ethereal grace and serene wisdom. He did not cry or resist when his parents delivered him to the royal palanquin, gazing at them with calm, luminous eyes.
Father, if my mortal flesh lifts the shadow of poverty from our home and spares the kingdom, I go with a joyful heart.

With a heavy conscience yet hardened by royal desperation, King Chandraprabha accepted the boy, ordering the midnight rites of Chandika to be prepared at the temple altar.
The Midnight Altar of Chandika
मध्यरात्रि की भयानक बलि-वेदी
Under the pitch-black canopy of midnight, the ancient stone altar of Goddess Chandika deep within the forbidden woods was smeared with red vermilion, surrounded by smoldering braziers of incense and bone-fires.

Draped in scarlet silk, the royal priest chanted ferocious invocations to the deities of destruction, raising the heavy, razor-sharp scimitar consecrated for the blood offering.
O Terrifying Mother! Sate your thirst with the pure blood of this Brahman youth and lift the plague from our land!

True to the horrific demonic pact, the mother and father stepped forward, gripping their own child's tiny hands and holding his head firmly against the cold stone block so he could not struggle!

King Chandraprabha knelt at the base of the altar, pinning the young boy's feet firmly to the ground. The very protectors of life were now the executors of slaughter.
The Radiant Laughter at the Edge of the Blade
खड्ग की धार पर बालक का दिव्य अट्टहास
The priest raised the heavy curved scimitar with both hands into the dark sky. From the surrounding shadows, the monstrous demon waited with bared fangs to gorge upon the severed flesh.

At that terrifying ultimate instant, as the cold steel hung inches from his throat, Gunakar looked at his parents pinning his hands, looked at the King holding his feet, looked up at the stars—and burst into radiant, joyous laughter!

His laughter was not the scream of hysteria; it was crystalline, musical, and filled with supreme transcendent ecstasy! The pure resonance of his joy echoed through the stone pillars, shattering the sinister gloom!
Ha ha ha! Ah, what an exquisite cosmic jest of Providence! What an astonishing spectacle this mortal world is!

Hearing that divine laughter, the priest's trembling hands dropped the sword, clattering loudly against the flagstones! The parents released their grip in terror, and King Chandraprabha fell to his knees in utter awe!
The Miracle & The Halting of the Sacrifice
बलि का स्थगन और राजा की व्याकुलता
King Chandraprabha folded his hands in reverence before the child on the altar, weeping as he pleaded to unravel the mystery.
O holy child! You are no ordinary mortal! What sublime truth caused you to laugh with boundless joy at the very threshold of horrific slaughter?! Reveal this mystery to me!

Gunakar spoke with tranquil sweetness: 'O King! When a child is in danger, he flees to the sheltering arms of his parents. If his parents fail him, he seeks justice from his King. And if the King turns against him, he cries out to God and the deities for refuge!'

''Yet look upon this altar! My own parents sold my flesh for gold and held my head for the blade! The King who is sworn to defend me pinned my feet for his crown! And the goddess and priest were summoned to drink my blood! When every protector became a butcher, I saw through the utter falsehood and illusion of all worldly attachments—and realized that the immortal Soul alone is real! That is why I laughed!''

Hearing the child's transcendent realization, the demon shrieked in terror and dissolved into nothingness. The sacrifice was halted forever, the pestilence vanished from the empire, and the enlightened boy was revered as the supreme spiritual master of the realm.
The Midnight Riddle & King Vikramaditya
अमावस्या की पहेली और विक्रम का अमर निर्णय
Concluding this profound narrative, Betal grinned amidst the swirling cemetery dust and posed the ultimate existential riddle to the Emperor of Ujjain.
Speak, O King of Kings! Here is the ultimate test of your Vedantic wisdom: What was the deepest, authentic reason behind the child's ecstatic laughter at the threshold of gruesome slaughter? How did an innocent seven-year-old conquer the terror of death? If you know the truth yet remain silent, your skull shall burst into a hundred fragments!

Emperor Vikramaditya paused, attuning his mind to the eternal truth of the Upanishads, before delivering his unassailable verdict.
Hear the supreme truth, Betal! The child laughed because at that precise instant, he attained direct, unblemished realization of the complete falsehood of Maya and the hollow illusion of all mortal dependencies!

"When every worldly refuge—parental love, royal justice, and ritual religion—collapsed into selfishness and cruelty simultaneously, the illusion shattered. The boy realized that all mortal relationships are transient masks. He experienced the immortal, indestructible nature of the Atman, which no sword can cut and no fire can burn! He laughed at the cosmic irony of his murderers and celebrated the glorious ecstasy of spiritual liberation!"

The moment the supreme philosophical truth was spoken, Emperor Vikramaditya's vow of silence was broken once more! Betal erupted into a piercing, ecstatic screech of laughter and soared into the midnight sky, vanishing into the tangled boughs of the Shinshapa tree!
Supreme philosopher, O King! None can match the depths of your discernment! But your spoken words have released me! Catch me if you can at the Shinshapa tree! Khehehehe!

Not a single trace of weariness or dismay touched Emperor Vikramaditya's noble face. Gripping his razor-sharp sword with unyielding resolve, he tightened his belt and marched back into the pitch-black heart of the charnel ground to capture the spirit for the twenty-first time!
Flee as often as you must, Betal! The path of truth may be arduous, but my vow is mightier than death itself!
