Chandraswami & The Guru's Grand Illusion
सप्तदश बेताल: चंद्रस्वामी और गुरु का मायाजाल
The Seventeenth Retrieval & The Seeker of Vidyas
सत्रहवीं चढ़ाई और विद्या-पिपासु चंद्रस्वामी
For the seventeenth time, Emperor Vikramaditya scaled the gnarled Shinshapa tree, severed the hanging corpse of Betal, and placed it upon his shoulders. As the King strode into the midnight mist, Betal began his seventeenth enigma.
Listen, O mighty Sovereign! If you would comprehend the elusive mystery of Maya and the hidden cravings of the human soul, hear this astonishing tale of the scholar Chandraswami and his Guru's grand illusion!

In ancient times lived Chandraswami, a youth of blazing intellect who had mastered every traditional Shastra. Yet his restless ambition hungered for supernatural Vidyas—the power to command reality and bend cosmic laws.
Mere books are for ordinary scholars! I seek the primordial Vidya that grants mastery over the elements and lifts the veil of time!

Abandoning all worldly comfort, Chandraswami traversed icy Himalayan ridges and misty cedar forests in search of a legendary master rumored to possess supreme occult power.

Upon a cloud-girt precipice, he arrived at the hermitage of Guru Kshemeshvara, an ancient ascetic whose penetrating gaze saw through the threefold fabric of past, present, and future.
Welcome, Chandraswami. You come demanding ultimate knowledge, but is your heart truly free from the latent desires and hidden attachments that poison mortal souls?

Prostrating at the sage's feet, Chandraswami pleaded eagerly for immediate initiation into the occult Vidyadharahood, boasting that his mind was tempered like steel and immune to worldly delusion.
O Master! I have conquered lust, wrath, and attachment! Test me as you will; I am prepared to receive the supreme initiation!

Guru Kshemeshvara smiled with serene compassion. In an instant, the sage perceived the dense thicket of unfulfilled worldly longings still smoldering within the young scholar's unconscious mind.
If your mind is truly sovereign, step into this sacred mountain pool and submerge your head for a single breath. When you surface, the secret of Vidya shall be yours.

Confident and eager, Chandraswami stepped into the shimmering pool, took a deep breath, and submerged his head beneath the mirror-like surface.
The Cosmic Plunge & The Life of Splendor
माया का अथाह सागर और राजसी वैभव
The instant the water closed over his crown, the boundaries of time dissolved! Chandraswami opened his eyes not to cold water, but to the opulent royal bedchamber of Kanchanapura, waking as a handsome young prince!

He found himself wedded to the breathtaking Princess Padmavati. Amidst the joyous chants of Vedic seers and the fragrance of sandalwood, their lives were joined in passionate, enduring love.
My beloved Lord! In your embrace alone rests my entire universe and every joy of life!

Upon the old monarch's passing, Chandraswami was crowned Emperor. For twenty glorious years, he wielded absolute authority, commanded vast armies, and basked in the adulation of millions.
This empire, these legions, and this boundless treasury are mine! Here at last is true mastery and sovereign fulfillment!

A radiant son was born to them—Prince Harshavardhana. Chandraswami poured the entirety of his heart into the child, binding his soul to the boy's laughter, steps, and sweet voice with unbreakable affection.
The Catastrophe of Loss & The Blazing Pyre

Yet cruel destiny struck without warning. A sudden, virulent pestilence gripped the young prince. Despite the prayers of the court and the finest medicines in the land, the child's breath faded into stillness.
My son! Open your eyes! Take my empire, take my very soul, but do not leave me in this desolate dark void!

Unable to bear the unbearable agony of maternal loss, Queen Padmavati's heart broke, and she collapsed lifeless beside her son's still body.

Upon the bleak riverbank, a massive pyre of fragrant sandalwood roared into the heavens, consuming the bodies of his cherished wife and child into ash and smoke.

Maddened by insurmountable grief and the unbearable emptiness of life, Chandraswami shrieked in despair: 'When my world is ash, what purpose remains in breathing?!' and hurled himself headlong into the roaring flames!
O Sacred Fire! Consume my agony! Let my breath dissolve with those I loved more than life itself!

Just as the searing heat of the pyre scorched his face, a firm and serene hand seized his dripping matted locks, lifting his head above the water!

Chandraswami collapsed onto the mossy stone bank, gasping wildly for air. He stared in dazed shock: the morning sun was still in the exact same spot in the sky, and the songbirds had not even finished their morning melody!
Where is my kingdom of Kanchanapura?! Where is my Queen Padmavati and my sweet son Harshavardhana?! Were they all consumed by the fire?!

Guru Kshemeshvara spoke with tranquil tenderness: 'Beloved child, you were beneath the water for barely three heartbeats. There was no Kanchanapura, no Queen Padmavati, and no deceased prince. It was but a momentary ripple within a single breath!'
The twenty years of sovereign glory, passionate romance, and shattering despair you just experienced were woven entirely from the fabric of your own hidden cravings!

All intellectual conceit and ambition shattered inside Chandraswami. He realized that all worldly glory and grief are merely projections of unexamined desire. He prostrated in supreme humility and true detachment.

As the tale concluded, Betal shrieked in the eerie silence of the charnel grounds and posed his philosophical enigma.
Answer, O King of Ujjain! That colossal twenty-year lifetime of kingdom, love, and shattering grief experienced in a three-second dip—was that grand illusion created by the Guru's occult mantra, or was it the direct manifestation of Chandraswami's own latent desires (Vasanas)? If you know the truth yet remain silent, your skull will burst into a hundred pieces!

Without a flicker of hesitation, Emperor Vikramaditya delivered his deep, unassailable philosophical judgment.
Hear the truth, Betal! That entire cosmic illusion was created purely by Chandraswami's own suppressed desires, hidden attachments, and latent Vasanas!

"The Guru's consecrated water was merely a mirror that suspended temporal constraints. But the ambition for royalty, the thirst for romance, the possessiveness of fatherhood, and the agony of bereavement came entirely from the dormant seeds within Chandraswami's own subconscious. The Master merely held up the mirror; the drama was fueled entirely by the seeker's own unpurified desires!"

The moment the profound truth was spoken, the King's vow of silence was broken once again! Betal let out a shrieking cackle and flew into the stormy sky, vanishing into the tangled boughs of the Shinshapa tree!
Masterful discernment, O King! But your spoken wisdom has shattered your vow! I fly back to my beloved boughs! Khehehehe!

With indomitable willpower and untouched by frustration, Emperor Vikramaditya drew his gleaming steel sword, tightened his leather belt, and marched back into the haunted shadows to conquer the spirit once more!
Flee as often as you must, Betal! My resolve stands firmer than the Himalayas, and my duty shall not falter!
