The Emerald Beads & The Fifteenth Night
On the fifteenth twilight, the matchmaker slipped into the mansion bearing an ornate gold necklace strung with carved emerald beads sent by Prince Gunashali.
Behold these celestial emerald beads, fair Prabhavati! The prince has prepared a moonlit pavilion by the riverbank for your arrival!

Draped in emerald-green silk with heavy gold zari borders, Prabhavati fastened the necklace around her neck by candlelight, smiling at her reflection.
Tonight, my courage is steadfast! I shall step through the courtyard doors!

She adjusted her silk veil and stepped toward the gate with swift, confident steps.

Shuka
From his high golden swing, Shuka bowed with dazzling courtly elegance.
May auspicious stars guide your journey, Queen of Charm! The midnight breeze is gentle! But tell me...

Prabhavati paused on the threshold, raising an amused eyebrow.
What fresh mystery do you bring tonight on this fifteenth night, O wise Shuka?

Shuka looked deep into her eyes, his ruby beak glinting in the lantern glow:
Go with joy, fair lady! But if an impossible royal decree traps your family tonight, do you possess the riddle-mastery of clever maiden Vidyutlata when King Tribhuvana demanded a rope made of pure river smoke?
A rope made of smoke?! How could anyone weave smoke into rope?!

The King
"Hear the triumph of village wit!" began Shuka. In the kingdom of Mithila, arrogant King Tribhuvana issued an impossible royal challenge to a poor farming village: *"Deliver to the palace a rope woven of pure river smoke, or pay ten thousand gold dinars in fine!"*

In the village square beneath the ancient banyan tree, the elders wept in despair, facing financial ruin and imprisonment.

Sharp-witted eighteen-year-old farmer's daughter **Vidyutlata** stepped forward with radiant confidence: *"Weep not, elders! Words can weave what physical hands cannot!"*

The Preparation of the Ash-Rope
In her humble cottage, Vidyutlata burnt a bundle of dried river reeds upon a bronze tray, carefully preserving the ash in the exact coils and twists of a three-ply woven rope!

Covered in fine royal silk, Vidyutlata carried the bronze tray into King Tribhuvana's grand courtroom, bowing with fearless dignity.

Unveiling the tray, Vidyutlata presented the perfect woven rope of delicate grey ash: *"Behold, Your Majesty! The village has spun your smoke-rope according to ancient sacred rites!"*

The Courtroom Trial & The Dissolving Smoke
Vidyutlata spoke with supreme courtroom eloquence: *"Smoke-ropes cannot be touched by common hands! Light one end with your royal lamp and pull the smoke-rope into your treasury!"*

Curious and amazed, King Tribhuvana leaned forward from his throne, reaching his royal fingers to grasp the ash rope.

The moment the King's fingers touched the ash, the delicate rope dissolved into a soft cloud of grey smoke that floated gracefully up to the carved palace ceiling!

Royal Laughter & The Triumph of Wit
King Tribhuvana and the entire court burst into roaring, thunderous laughter, thoroughly outwitted by the village maiden's brilliant counter-riddle!

The King canceled the village fine and presented Vidyutlata with a heavy chest of one thousand gold dinars in honor of her intellect.

Vidyutlata returned to her village triumphantly with gold, celebrated by the cheering elders as the savior of her people!

The Fifteenth Dawn in Chandravati
Back on the moonlit balcony of Chandravati, Shuka concluded the tale with piercing moral clarity under the starlight.

Prabhavati sat on the velvet bolsters, marveling at Vidyutlata's brilliant answer to the impossible riddle.
How sublime! She answered an impossible demand with an equally impossible reality!

Shuka delivered his fifteenth decisive riddle:
Now tell me, Prabhavati—is it wiser to chase flattering promises that are merely ropes of smoke, or hold fast to the solid ground of honour and duty?

Prabhavati sat in quiet contemplation, realizing that the prince's romantic vows were merely ropes of smoke that dissolve into thin air.

As the lesson sank into her soul, golden dawn sunlight flooded the Chandravati skyline! The temple conches sounded across the city. The fifteenth night had passed!

Smiling with profound reverence, Prabhavati unclasped the emerald beads necklace, placed it beside Shuka's golden swing, and returned peacefully to her bedchamber—her virtue and household saved for the fifteenth night!
You have shown me that sweet flattery is merely smoke, wise Shuka. Rest peacefully, and tonight I shall return for your sixteenth tale!
Rest well, noble Mistress. When dusk falls, the sixteenth enigma shall awaken!
