The Sapphire Brooch & The Forty-Sixth Night
On the forty-sixth twilight, a messenger arrived bearing an exquisite sapphire-and-gold brooch sent to Prabhavati.
See how these deep blue sapphires catch the evening light, fair lady! Tonight's lakeside gallery feast awaits your grace!

Draped in sapphire-and-gold silk with heavy gold zari borders, Prabhavati pinned the brooch into her veil by candlelight, admiring her reflection.
Tonight, my steps shall guide me to the art pavilion!

She adjusted her sheer veil and walked with swift, eager steps toward the mansion gate.

Shuka
From his high golden swing, Shuka bowed with dazzling courtly elegance.
May auspicious stars illuminate your footsteps, Queen of Charm! The midnight breeze is gentle! But tell me...

Prabhavati paused on the threshold, raising an amused eyebrow.
What fresh enigma do you bring tonight on this forty-sixth night, O wise Shuka?

Shuka looked deep into her eyes, his ruby beak glinting in the lantern glow:
Go with joy, fair lady! But do you possess the supreme artistic and philosophical discernment of Master Sculptor Somendra when Emperor Yashovarma held an imperial contest between a flamboyant painter and a sculptor who polished stone into a living mirror?
A painter of colors vs. a polisher of stone?! How did a polished stone wall reflect all beauty without painting a single line?!

The Imperial Art Contest in Avanti
"Hear the masterclass of pure reflection versus painted illusion!" began Shuka. In the grand temple hall of ancient Avanti, Emperor Yashovarma commissioned two facing white marble walls separated by a massive curtain for a six-month art contest.

Flashy painter Chitrasena brought barrels of expensive gold, lapis lazuli, vermilion, and turquoise paints to decorate the left wall with colorful deities.

Master sculptor Somendra brought no paint at all—only fine river silt, agate polishing stones, and pure sesame oil for the right marble wall.
How can you win a masterpiece contest without a drop of gold paint?!

Six Months of Relentless Polishing
Behind the curtain, Chitrasena worked furiously, painting intricate multi-colored celestial apsaras, peacocks, and golden palaces across his wall.

On the other side, Somendra polished and rubbed the raw Makrana marble wall tirelessly day and night, removing every scratch, speck of dust, and flaw.
Purity reflects the universe; paint only covers it!

By the final day, Somendra's marble wall had become a flawless, crystal-clear mirror reflecting every lantern beam with liquid perfection!

The Judgment Day & The Drawn Curtain
On judgment day, Emperor Yashovarma and the assembly inspected Chitrasena’s wall: the court gasped at the vibrant colors and celestial figures!

The Emperor turned to Somendra's plain white wall in confusion: *"Where is your artwork, sculptor? The marble is bare!"*

Somendra smiled calmly, pulling the massive dividing curtain completely aside and opening the high eastern skylights to the morning sun!

The Living Marble Mirror & Imperial Crown
As light flooded the hall, Somendra’s polished marble mirror reflected Chitrasena’s painting with **ten times greater luminous depth, vibrant light, and 3D living brilliance**—capturing the painting, the moving court, the Emperor, and the azure sky!

The Emperor and court roared in a thunderous standing ovation, utterly mesmerized by how the pure, polished surface reflected all truth and beauty!

The Emperor placed the Golden Laurel of Imperial Master upon Somendra: *"A cluttered mind paints temporary illusions, but a pure, unblemished soul reflects the infinite glory of the universe!"*
Purity is the supreme masterpiece of existence!

The Forty-Sixth Dawn in Chandravati
Back on the moonlit balcony of Chandravati, Shuka concluded the tale with piercing moral clarity under the starlight.

Prabhavati sat on the velvet bolsters, marveling at how a pure, unblemished heart of fidelity reflects all beauty, while external painted illusions fade away.
How profound! A pure, polished heart of fidelity reflects all beauty, while painted illusions fade into dust!

Shuka delivered his forty-sixth decisive riddle:
Now tell me, Prabhavati—is it wiser to paint your life with the gaudy colors of temporary flattery, or keep the mirror of your heart pure and unblemished in Dharma?

Prabhavati sat in quiet introspection, realizing that keeping her heart pure and faithful reflects the timeless honor of her home and lineage.

As the lesson illuminated her soul, golden dawn sunlight flooded the Chandravati skyline! The temple conches sounded across the city. The forty-sixth night had passed!

Smiling with deep reverence, Prabhavati unclasped the sapphire brooch, placed sweet almonds before Shuka's golden swing, and returned peacefully to her bedchamber—her virtue and household protected for the forty-sixth night!
You have shown me how to keep the mirror of my soul pure and polished in Dharma, wise Shuka. Rest peacefully, and tonight I shall return for your forty-seventh tale!
Rest well, noble Mistress. When dusk falls, the forty-seventh enigma shall awaken!
