The Ruby Ring & The Sixteenth Night
On the sixteenth twilight, the matchmaker slipped into the mansion bearing a glittering ruby-encrusted gold ring sent by Prince Gunashali.
See this ruby ring of eternal devotion, fair lady! The prince swears his palace is waiting for your footsteps!

Draped in royal purple and gold silk, Prabhavati slipped the ruby ring onto her slender finger, admiring its fiery brilliance.
Tonight, my journey cannot be delayed! I shall step through the courtyard doors!

She adjusted her sheer veil and walked with swift, resolute steps toward the mansion gate.

Shuka
From his high golden swing, Shuka bowed with dazzling courtly elegance.
May the stars smile upon your journey, Queen of Grace! The midnight air is fragrant! But tell me...

Prabhavati paused on the threshold, raising an amused eyebrow.
What fresh enigma do you bring tonight on this sixteenth night, O wise Shuka?

Shuka looked deep into her eyes, his ruby beak glinting with solemn gravity:
Go with joy, fair lady! But do you possess the patient discernment of Sreshthi Somadatta when blind impulse and hasty anger destroyed the most loyal guardian of his house?
A loyal guardian destroyed by hasty anger?! What tragic mistake was made?!
स्वामिभक्त श्वान और ऋण का बन्धक
The Faithful Guard Dog as Collateral
"Hear the most heartbreaking truth of hasty action!" began Shuka. In ancient Ujjayini, impoverished merchant Somadatta borrowed five hundred gold coins from wealthy moneylender Dhanapala, leaving his beloved, highly intelligent guard dog Bhairava as collateral pawn.

Somadatta tearfully stroked the noble hound's head: *"Stay faithful and guard this master's household until I return with your ransom!"* The dog nodded with intelligent, loving eyes.

One dark midnight, a gang of masked bandits burrowed through the moneylender's mansion wall, looting a heavy iron chest of gold and diamonds while the guards slept!

The Dog
Under the moonlit sky, Bhairava silently tracked the fleeing thieves to a dry riverbed, watching them bury the iron treasure chest beneath sandy gravel before fleeing.

The next morning, while Dhanapala wept over his ruined fortune, Bhairava tugged the moneylender's dhoti with his teeth, barking and urging him toward the riverbed.

At the dry riverbed, Bhairava dug frantically into the gravel with his paws, unearthing the iron chest with all five hundred thousand gold coins and diamonds untouched!

The Letter of Freedom & The Tragic Misunderstanding
Overjoyed, Dhanapala wrote a royal letter of complete debt discharge, tying it around Bhairava's neck: *"Go home, noble dog! Your loyalty has repaid your master's debt ten times over!"*

Bhairava bounded happily along the sunlit highway toward Somadatta's home, barking with joy at the thought of reuniting with his beloved master.

From his veranda, Somadatta saw the dog running toward him alone. Blinded by hasty shame and thinking the dog had broken his pledge and run away, Somadatta's face turned crimson with rage!

The Fatal Blow & Eternal Remorse
As the joyful dog reached him to lick his feet, Somadatta swung his heavy wooden staff in blind fury, striking the loyal hound squarely upon the skull!

Collapsing in a pool of blood, the dying dog whined softly with loving eyes, gently tapping its paw against the parchment letter tied to its collar before breathing its last.

Somadatta opened the letter, reading Dhanapala's glowing praise and debt discharge. He screamed in agonizing horror, falling to his knees and clutching his lifeless guardian in bitter, inconsolable tears!

The Sixteenth Dawn in Chandravati
Back on the moonlit balcony of Chandravati, Shuka concluded the tale with solemn moral gravity under the starlight.

Prabhavati sat on the velvet bolsters, weeping soft tears of grief and realization.
What tragic sorrow! A single moment of blind impulse destroyed the most faithful soul on earth!

Shuka delivered his sixteenth decisive riddle:
Now tell me, Prabhavati—what weapon destroys a home faster than fire: a physical blade, or hasty action taken without knowing the full truth?

Prabhavati sat in profound contemplation, realizing that impulsive midnight actions bring irreversible destruction to a faithful home and loving husband.

As the truth sank into her heart, golden dawn sunlight flooded the Chandravati skyline! The temple conches sounded across the city. The sixteenth night had passed!

Smiling through tears of gratitude, Prabhavati removed the ruby ring, placed it beside Shuka's golden swing, and returned peacefully to her bedchamber—her virtue, household, and loyalty preserved for the sixteenth night!
You have saved me from the poison of hasty impulse, wise Shuka. Rest peacefully, and tonight I shall return for your seventeenth tale!
Rest well, noble Mistress. When dusk falls, the seventeenth enigma shall awaken!
