The Diamond Choker & The Twenty-Fifth Night
On the twenty-fifth twilight, a courier delivered an opulent sparkling diamond choker necklace sent to Prabhavati.
See these flawless diamonds from the southern mines, noble lady! My master awaits you at his moonlit mansion feast!

Draped in sky-blue and silver silk with heavy gold zari borders, Prabhavati fastened the diamond choker by candlelight, admiring her reflection.
Tonight, my journey cannot be delayed! I shall step through the courtyard doors!

She adjusted her sheer veil and walked with swift, confident steps toward the mansion gate.

Shuka
From his high golden swing, Shuka bowed with dazzling courtly elegance.
May auspicious stars illuminate your path, Queen of Charm! The evening air is fragrant! But tell me...

Prabhavati paused on the threshold, raising an amused eyebrow.
What fresh enigma do you bring tonight on this twenty-fifth night, O wise Shuka?

Shuka looked deep into her eyes, his ruby beak glinting in the lantern glow:
Go with joy, fair lady! But if a hidden crime in your household is blamed on innocent servants tonight, do you possess the psychological forensic wit of Minister Chanakyadeva when the temple's sacred gold chalice was stolen and exposed using a donkey's tail coated with lamp soot in a dark room?
A sacred donkey with lamp soot catching a temple thief?! How did clean hands prove a man guilty in open court?!

The Stolen Gold Chalice in Pataliputra
"Hear the masterclass of psychological forensics!" began Shuka. In the grand Mahavishnu temple of ancient Pataliputra, the sacred solid gold chalice (*Suvarna-Kalasha*) was stolen overnight from the locked sanctum sanctorum!

Ten temple attendants and guards were detained. Standing before the Chief Judge, all ten loudly swore their innocence upon sacred tulsi leaves and holy fire.
We are devout servants of the Lord! May lightning strike us if we touched the chalice!

Wise Minister Chanakyadeva entered the temple hall, smiling with calm psychological insight. *"Oaths are easily spoken by liars. Let the divine donkey of Yama reveal the guilty heart!"*

The Donkey & The Blackened Lamp-Soot Tail
Chanakyadeva had a sturdy grey donkey tethered inside a completely dark, windowless inner stone chamber of the temple.

In secret, Chanakyadeva coated the donkey's bushy tail with thick, wet, greasy black lamp soot (*kajjala*) mixed with sesame oil.

He announced to the suspects: *"This is a divine prophetic donkey of Dharma! Enter the dark room one by one and pull its tail firmly—the beast will bray like thunder only when the thief touches it!"*
Pull firmly in the dark! The innocent have nothing to fear!

The Darkness & The Panic of Guilt
One by one, nine innocent temple attendants entered the pitch-black room, fearlessly grasped the donkey's tail with both hands, and walked out in calm silence.

The real thief entered the pitch-black room, sweating in absolute terror that the donkey would bray and expose him. He waved his hands in the empty air, deliberately avoiding touching the tail!
*If I don't touch the tail, the donkey will never bray! I am safe!*

All ten suspects reassembled in the brightly lit temple courtyard before the King, judges, and high priests.

The Clean Hands That Proved Guilt
Chanakyadeva commanded: *"Raise both open palms before the judges!"* Nine innocent men showed hands coated with thick black lamp soot—while the guilty thief showed **PERFECTLY CLEAN, UNSTAINED PALMS!**
Behold! The nine innocent men pulled the tail without fear. Only the guilty thief was too terrified to touch it!

The unmasked thief fell to his knees in sheer horror, weeping and confessing where he had buried the gold chalice beneath his cottage floor.
I confess! The chalice is buried beneath the neem tree in my garden!

Guards recovered the gleaming golden chalice, restoring it to the temple altar, while the disgraced thief was led away in iron chains!

The Twenty-Fifth Dawn in Chandravati
Back on the moonlit balcony of Chandravati, Shuka concluded the tale with piercing moral clarity under the starlight.

Prabhavati sat on the velvet bolsters, marveling at how the thief's clean hands betrayed his guilty mind.
How sublime! The thief's very attempt to stay clean unmasked him before the entire kingdom!

Shuka delivered his twenty-fifth decisive riddle:
Now tell me, Prabhavati—is it wiser to think secret guilt can be concealed in the dark, or remember that fear of exposure always leaves its own undeniable mark?

Prabhavati sat in quiet introspection, realizing that hidden deceit and unnatural caution always expose the guilty soul.

As the lesson illuminated her soul, golden dawn sunlight flooded the Chandravati skyline! The temple conches sounded across the city. The twenty-fifth night had passed!

Smiling with deep reverence, Prabhavati unclasped the diamond choker, placed sweet almonds before Shuka's golden swing, and returned peacefully to her bedchamber—her virtue and household protected for the twenty-fifth night!
You have shown me how guilt betrays itself in the dark, wise Shuka. Rest peacefully, and tonight I shall return for your twenty-sixth tale!
Rest well, noble Mistress. When dusk falls, the twenty-sixth enigma shall awaken!
