The Ruby Hair Comb & The Forty-Eighth Night
On the forty-eighth twilight, a messenger arrived with an exquisite gold hair comb set with sparkling red rubies sent to Prabhavati.
See these fiery rubies, fair lady! Tonight's lakeside terrace music festival awaits your grace!

Draped in royal crimson-and-gold silk with heavy gold zari borders, Prabhavati fastened the comb into her hair by candlelight, admiring its fiery luster.
Tonight, my courage shall guide me! I shall attend the festival!

She adjusted her sheer veil and walked with swift, eager steps toward the mansion gate.

Shuka
From his high golden swing, Shuka bowed with dazzling courtly elegance.
May auspicious stars illuminate your footsteps, Queen of Charm! The midnight air is fragrant! But tell me...

Prabhavati paused on the threshold, raising an amused eyebrow.
What fresh enigma do you bring tonight on this forty-eighth night, O wise Shuka?

Shuka looked deep into her eyes, his ruby beak glinting in the lantern glow:
Go with joy, fair lady! But do you possess the forensic soil discernment of Judge Dharmashila when three traveling partners buried a silk bag of three hundred pearls beneath an ancient banyan tree, only for the pearls to vanish overnight?
A buried bag of pearls stolen from beneath a sacred tree?! How did the judge identify which of the three partners dug up the treasure?!

The Three Partners & The Buried Pearls
"Hear the masterclass of earth unmasking human greed!" began Shuka. Returning from a sea voyage, three merchant partners—Manidatta, Somadatta, and Kuberadatta—buried a silk bag of 300 rare pearls beneath an ancient banyan tree by the river.

They swore a solemn oath by the sacred river to return together at dawn and divide the pearls equally.

At midnight, greedy partner Kuberadatta crept through the dark mist with a bronze shovel, digging four feet deep into the banyan roots to steal the bag for himself!
All three hundred pearls shall be mine alone!

The Dispute & The Courtroom Trial
At dawn, the three partners dug up the hole—it was empty! Shouting and bitter accusations erupted as they dragged each other to the royal court.

Before wise Judge Dharmashila, all three merchants swore innocence before the holy fire with loud cries.

Judge Dharmashila ordered three brass basins of warm water brought into court: *"Remove your sandals and wash your feet and hands in separate basins!"*
Let the earth itself give testimony before the law!

Forensic Soil & Scent Analysis
Dharmashila examined the washed sediment: Manidatta and Somadatta had only dry surface river sand on their sandals and fingers.

In Kuberadatta's sandal seams and fingernails, the judge discovered **dense, sticky, damp blue clay (*Neel-Mrittika*)** found exclusively at four feet depth beneath the banyan roots!

Furthermore, Kuberadatta's palms gave off the pungent, bitter milky resin of freshly cut banyan root sap, which clings to skin for two full days!

The Confession & Fair Restitution
Trapped by incontrovertible soil and botanical evidence, Kuberadatta collapsed in tears, confessing he hid the silk bag inside his kitchen hearth!
Forgive me, my lord! The blue clay and tree sap have exposed my greed!

Royal constables recovered the intact bag of 300 pearls from the hearth, dividing the fortune equally between the two honest partners.

Judge Dharmashila proclaimed to all citizens: *"The earth and nature never lie; greedy hands always leave their sticky signature in the soil!"*
Truth is written in the soil and soul!

The Forty-Eighth Dawn in Chandravati
Back on the moonlit balcony of Chandravati, Shuka concluded the tale with piercing moral clarity under the starlight.

Prabhavati sat on the velvet bolsters, marveling at how dishonest greed always leaves indelible traces, while truth remains clear and pure.
How profound! Dishonest greed always leaves indelible traces, while truth remains clear and pure!

Shuka delivered his forty-eighth decisive riddle:
Now tell me, Prabhavati—is it wiser to believe secret deceit can remain hidden from truth, or walk in the unblemished light of honest vows?

Prabhavati sat in quiet introspection, realizing that secret suitors' promises leave the sticky clay of deceit on whoever touches them.

As the lesson illuminated her soul, golden dawn sunlight flooded the Chandravati skyline! The temple conches sounded across the city. The forty-eighth night had passed!

Smiling with deep reverence, Prabhavati unclasped the ruby hair comb, placed sweet almonds before Shuka's golden swing, and returned peacefully to her bedchamber—her virtue and household protected for the forty-eighth night!
You have shown me that the earth and conscience never conceal deceit, wise Shuka. Rest peacefully, and tonight I shall return for your forty-ninth tale!
Rest well, noble Mistress. When dusk falls, the forty-ninth enigma shall awaken!
