The First Night: Buddhimati & The Tiger in the Forest
The Sal Wilderness & The Beast
"Listen attentively, noble Prabhavati!" began Shuka. In the ancient countryside of Deulakhya lived a courageous and sharp-witted woman named Buddhimati. Undertaking an urgent journey to her father's home, she walked through the dense, towering Sal wilderness leading her two young sons by the hand.
Stay close to my saree, children. The jungle grows deeper, and we must cross the river before twilight.

As the canopy thickened into pitch-black shadows, the birds suddenly ceased singing. The jungle fell into a sinister, deathly silence.
Mother! Something is watching us from the bamboo thicket!

With a bone-chilling roar, a colossal royal Bengal tiger sprang out from the shadows! Its burning amber eyes locked onto the mother and children, muscles coiled to pounce and tear them to shreds!
The Mother
In that split second between life and death, Buddhimati did not freeze or scream. *'Running is instant death. Fear will feed the beast. My only weapon is audacity!'*

To the tiger's utter bewilderment, the woman marched straight toward the beast! She grabbed both of her terrified boys by the ears and slapped their cheeks with furious motherly scolding!
Silence, you greedy brats! Why are you fighting like dogs over one single tiger?!

She pointed her finger straight at the predator and shouted loud enough to shake the treetops!
Divide this small tiger between you two for dinner today! Tomorrow morning I shall hunt a much larger beast for your breakfast!

The giant tiger froze mid-air! Its blood ran cold. *'By the gods! This is no human woman—she is the legendary Vyaghramari (The Tiger-Devourer) who feeds entire tigers to her cubs!'*
The Flight & The Cunning Jackal
In blind terror, the King of the Jungle spun around and galloped for its life, crashing through thorn bushes and leaping ravines!

Deep in the forest, a shrewd grey jackal named Jambuka watched the panting predator collapse behind a boulder and burst into mocking laughter.
Hahaha! Where does the mighty Lord of the Forest run with his tail between his legs like a whipped dog?

The tiger gasped for breath, his yellow eyes darting around in paranoia.
Silence, fool! A terrifying demoness—the Vyaghramari—has entered our woods! She slaps her cubs for arguing over eating me for supper!

The jackal shook his head with wicked cunning. *"O brainless beast! That was merely an ordinary human woman using trickery to save her hide! Come with me, and we shall feast upon her flesh together!"*
The Tied-Tail Pact & The Second Attack
Still terrified of betrayal, the tiger demanded a pact: *"Tie your neck to my tail with this strong jungle vine. If she attacks, we stand and die together!"*

Bound together by the green vine, the tiger and the jackal marched back toward the clearing, their fangs gleaming in the sunlight.

Seeing the beast return led by the scheming jackal, most humans would have fainted in despair. But Buddhimati's genius flared with even greater brilliance!

She planted her feet, pointed a scathing finger straight at the jackal, and shouted with thunderous rage!
O treacherous Jambuka! Your grandfather owed me THREE fat tigers for my dinner today! How dare you bring only ONE skinny, miserable beast tied to your neck?!

The tiger stared down at the jackal in sudden, horrifying realization: *'The traitor! He was bringing me to her as a debt-offering!'*
The Catastrophic Drag & Triumph of Intellect
With a roar of pure panic, the colossal tiger leaped backward and bolted at breakneck speed, dragging the tied jackal behind it over rocks, mud, and thorn bushes!

The cunning jackal screamed in agonizing regret as he bounced through brambles and muddy ditch water, while the terrified tiger did not stop running until it crossed three kingdom borders!
Aaaagh! Stop, you fool! I'm innocent! Aaaagh!

Smiling serenely, Buddhimati and her laughing boys walked peacefully out of the forest into the open meadows, completely unharmed—having conquered sheer brute force through razor-sharp presence of mind.

Back on the moonlit veranda of Chandravati, Shuka looked down at Prabhavati, whose jaw was slack with amazement.
You see, noble lady? In the face of mortal danger, not weapons but instant intellect turns the hunter into the hunted!
The Riddle, The Dawn & The First Night
Prabhavati sat on the velvet cushions, her midnight rendezvous completely forgotten, her mind buzzing with the brilliance of Buddhimati.

Shuka leaned forward, delivering the decisive riddle:
Now tell me, fair Prabhavati—if you step into the dark streets tonight and the city guards catch you, do you possess the swift wit to turn your captors against each other like Buddhimati? If not, ruin awaits!

As Prabhavati opened her mouth to debate the riddle, the temple conches and morning bells of Chandravati sounded across the horizon! Radiant golden sunlight poured through the carved jali screens. Dawn had arrived!

The streets were filled with morning travelers; the secret escape was thwarted for the night. Smiling with deep wonder and respect, Prabhavati retreated peacefully to her chambers to await the next dusk—her virtue and household preserved by the wisdom of Shuka!
You have saved me from folly today, wise bird. Rest in peace, and tonight you shall tell me your second tale!
Sleep well, noble Mistress. When the moon rises, the second enigma awaits!
