The Nineteenth Night: The Two Courtesans & The Golden Mango
The Silver Mirror & The Nineteenth Night
On the nineteenth twilight, marking the start of a new season of trials, a foreign spice merchant's courier sneaked onto the veranda, presenting an exquisite emerald-encrusted silver mirror to Prabhavati.
Behold your divine beauty in this royal silver mirror, noble lady! My master invites you to view his celestial spice galleons at the harbor!

Draped in emerald-green and gold silk with heavy gold zari borders, Prabhavati held the mirror by candlelight, admiring her reflection.
A new season begins. Surely a harmless visit to inspect foreign silks cannot harm my household!

She adjusted her sheer veil and walked with swift, confident steps toward the mansion gate.
Shuka
From his high golden swing, Shuka bowed with dazzling courtly elegance.
May auspicious stars illuminate your path, Queen of Charm! The evening breeze is cool! But tell me...

Prabhavati paused on the threshold, raising an amused eyebrow.
What fresh enigma opens this second season of nights, O wise Shuka?

Shuka looked deep into her eyes, his ruby beak glinting in the lantern glow:
Go with joy, fair lady! But if a false claimant tries to steal what is precious to your heart tonight, do you possess the psychological courtroom wisdom of King Jayapala when two rival women claimed ownership of the same child and a golden mango?
Two women claiming one child and a golden mango?! How did the King reveal the true mother without blood tests or witnesses?!
The Courtroom Dispute in Kanchipuram
"Hear the masterclass of psychological jurisprudence!" began Shuka. In ancient Kanchipuram, two rival women stood before King Jayapala on his golden throne, each violently claiming ownership of a two-year-old boy and a golden heirloom mango.

Woman 1 wept theatrically, shouting dramatic oaths; while Woman 2 stood pale as marble, clutching her trembling chest in silent, agonizing sorrow.
He is my flesh and blood, Your Majesty! She stole him while I fetched water!
The child is my very life... God bears witness to my womb!

The royal ministers and village elders examined witnesses for hours, completely baffled because both women gave identical accounts and physical proof did not exist.
The King
King Jayapala rose from his throne, unsheathing his gleaming royal steel sword with solemn majesty.

King Jayapala commanded with thunderous voice: *"Since the law cannot divide a living soul, slice the boy into two equal halves—one half for each claimant!"*

The entire courtroom froze in absolute horror. The executioner stepped forward, sword raised, testing the hearts of both women!
The Test of Maternal Sacrifice
Woman 1 smirked coldly with crossed arms: *"Let it be so! If I cannot possess him, neither shall she! Divide the child equally!"*
Cut the child! Let neither of us boast of victory!

Woman 2 screamed in frantic terror, throwing her entire body over the child to shield him from the blade!
No! Spare his life, Your Majesty! Give the child whole to the other woman! Let my son live, even if I never hold him again!

King Jayapala instantly ordered the sword lowered, his eyes shining with divine judicial brilliance!
Lower the blade! The true mother has revealed herself!
The True Mother Reunited & Restitution
King Jayapala proclaimed before the cheering court: *"True love chooses the beloved's life over selfish possession! Woman 2 is the true mother!"*

Weeping tears of joy, the true mother embraced her safe, laughing son tightly to her heart. The King presented her with the golden mango and five hundred gold dinars.

Guards dragged the cruel false claimant away in heavy chains to the royal dungeon for her malicious deceit.
The Nineteenth Dawn in Chandravati
Back on the moonlit balcony of Chandravati, Shuka concluded the tale with piercing moral clarity under the starlight.

Prabhavati sat on the velvet bolsters, deeply moved by the power of true love over selfish desire.
How sublime! True love surrenders its own claim so that the beloved may live in honour!

Shuka delivered his nineteenth decisive riddle:
Now tell me, Prabhavati—is it love that seeks to possess someone for selfish pleasure, or love that protects their honour and life at any cost?

Prabhavati sat in quiet introspection, realizing that the foreign merchant's flattering overtures were merely selfish possession disguised as romance.

As the lesson illuminated her soul, golden dawn sunlight flooded the Chandravati skyline! The temple conches sounded across the city. The nineteenth night had passed!

Smiling with profound reverence, Prabhavati set aside the silver mirror, placed sweet grapes before Shuka's golden swing, and returned peacefully to her bedchamber—her virtue and household saved for the nineteenth night!
You have opened Season Two with divine truth, wise Shuka. Rest peacefully, and tonight I shall return for your twentieth tale!
Rest well, noble Mistress. When dusk falls, the twentieth enigma shall awaken!
