The Ninth Night: The Three Suitors & The Celestial Garland
The Pearl Jhumkas & The Ninth Night
On the ninth twilight, the matchmaker slipped onto the veranda carrying a pair of shimmering pearl-and-gold ear jhumkas sent by Prince Gunashali.
See these divine jhumkas, fair lady! The prince has prepared a royal feast under the Ashoka blossoms for your arrival!

Draped in rose-pink silk with rich gold zari borders, Prabhavati fastened the pearl jhumkas to her ears by candlelight, admiring her glowing reflection.
Tonight, my courage is steadfast! I shall step through the courtyard doors!

Holding her silk veil, she walked with swift, eager steps toward the mansion gate.
Shuka
From his high golden swing, Shuka bowed with dazzling courtly elegance.
May the stars guide your journey, Queen of Charm! The midnight air is fragrant! But tell me...

Prabhavati paused on the threshold, raising an amused eyebrow.
What fresh mystery do you bring tonight, my wise bird? Speak quickly!

Shuka looked deep into her eyes, his ruby beak glinting in the lantern glow:
Go with joy, fair lady! But if three powerful suitors demand your hand simultaneously tonight, can you judge their true worth like Princess Ratnavati and the Celestial Parijata Garland before King Somaprabha?
Three suitors and a celestial garland?! How did she choose the one truly worthy?!
The Royal Swayamvara & The Parijata Garland
"Hear the tale of true nobility!" began Shuka. In the golden kingdom of Kalinga, King Somaprabha held a grand swayamvara for his virtuous daughter, Princess Ratnavati.

Three renowned suitors stepped into the hall: warrior general Gajendra with heavy steel armor, court poet Kaviraja with a silk lute, and humble physician Jnanavanta with an herb satchel.

The King presented a rare celestial Parijata flower garland glowing with golden divine light!
This celestial garland blooms eternally for truth and virtue, but withers to ashes at the touch of falsehood or selfishness!
The Three Tests of Character
First, General Gajendra opened chests of war loot and bloodstained swords, boasting: *"I have slain ten thousand warriors and burned fifty cities with my iron blade! Make me your lord!"*

Next, poet Kaviraja played his lute, reciting exaggerated flattery: *"The moon weeps in envy of your cheeks, fair Princess! My verses shall make your beauty immortal!"*

Suddenly, a palace guard announced that a poor sick orphan boy had collapsed at the city gates in the pouring storm. While others ignored the plea, physician Jnanavanta immediately abandoned the royal swayamvara, grabbing his herbs and running into the rain!
The Physician
In the muddy street under torrential rain, Jnanavanta knelt beside the shivering orphan boy, administering life-saving herbs and wrapping him in his own warm wool cloak until the boy smiled and breathed freely!

Jnanavanta returned to the royal hall drenched in rain, with muddy sandals and soaked robes, his face shining with pure joy: *"The child lives! His fever is broken!"*

Warrior Gajendra and Poet Kaviraja mocked his muddy clothes, laughing: *"Look at this foolish beggar! He traded a royal crown for a street orphan!"*
The Celestial Garland Blooms
Princess Ratnavati walked straight past the arrogant warrior and flattering poet, placing the glowing celestial Parijata garland around humble physician Jnanavanta's neck!

The moment the garland touched Jnanavanta, the Parijata flowers burst into radiant golden sunlight, filling the entire palace hall with sweet heavenly fragrance!

King Somaprabha and all elders cheered in thunderous joy, blessing the marriage of true compassion over hollow ambition and flattering verse!
The Ninth Dawn in Chandravati
Back on the moonlit balcony of Chandravati, Shuka concluded the tale with piercing moral clarity under the starlight.

Prabhavati sat on the velvet bolsters, marveling at the beauty of genuine virtue.
What sublime truth! True nobility lies not in slaying foes or reciting flattery, but in selflessly saving a life!

Shuka delivered his ninth decisive riddle:
Now tell me, Prabhavati—is it wiser to be dazzled by flattering sweet-talkers, or honor the steadfast heart that protects life and duty?

Prabhavati sat in quiet contemplation, seeing through the prince's hollow romantic poems and realizing that flattery is not love.

As the lesson sank into her soul, golden dawn sunlight flooded the Chandravati skyline! The temple conches sounded across the city. The ninth night had passed!

Smiling with profound reverence, Prabhavati removed the pearl jhumkas, placed them beside Shuka's golden swing, and returned peacefully to her bedchamber—virtue and household saved for the ninth night!
You have opened my eyes to the false glitter of words, wise Shuka. Rest peacefully, and tonight I shall return for your tenth tale!
Rest well, noble Mistress. When dusk falls, the tenth enigma shall awaken!
