The Fifth Night: The Greedy Goldsmith & The Stolen Anklets
The Emerald Pendant & The Fifth Night
Twilight fell across Chandravati on the fifth evening. The matchmaker arrived bearing a dazzling green emerald pendant set in filigree gold, sent by Prince Gunashali.
See this emerald from the royal treasury, noble lady! The prince swears you are the goddess of his dreams!

Draped in radiant golden-yellow silk with heavy zari borders, Prabhavati fastened the emerald pendant around her neck by candlelight, smiling at her reflection.
Tonight, the city sleeps early. I shall glide through the gates unseen!

She adjusted her sheer veil and walked with swift, silent steps toward the courtyard doorway.
Shuka
From his high golden swing, Shuka bowed with dazzling courtly elegance, his voice sweeter than honey.
May joy accompany your steps, fair Queen! The moonlit garden is fragrant! But tell me...

Prabhavati stopped at the threshold with a knowing, intrigued smile.
What fresh enigma do you have for me tonight, my green teacher? Speak quickly!

Shuka tilted his head, his ruby beak gleaming in the lamp glow:
Go by all means, fair lady! But if your secret jewels are switched with fake brass tonight, do you possess the tactical genius of Sreshthi Dhanapala when he trapped the greedy goldsmith Swarnadatta?
Swarnadatta?! How did Dhanapala trap a dishonest goldsmith who swore false oaths?!
The Goldsmith & The Hollow Golden Anklets
"Listen to the art of justice!" began Shuka. In ancient Mathura, wealthy merchant Dhanapala gave fifty tolas of pure gold to the master goldsmith Swarnadatta to craft hollow tinkling anklets (*nupur*) for his bride.

Blinded by greed, Swarnadatta melted the gold in his dark back room, secretly stealing twenty-five tolas of pure gold and stuffing the hollow interior of the anklets with cheap lead and copper slag!

He polished the outer gold shell until it sparkled like the sun, presenting the anklets to Dhanapala with grand theatrical devotion.
Behold, noble Sreshthi! Fifty tolas of purest celestial gold, crafted with the blessings of Vishwakarma!
The False Oath & The Five-Hundred Tola Lure
Dhanapala weighed the anklets in his hand; the balance felt suspicious. But when questioned, the goldsmith boldly placed his hand over the sacred fire, swearing: *"May my eyes turn blind if I have stolen a single grain of your gold!"*

Knowing courts require undeniable proof, Dhanapala smiled with warm hospitality.
I believe your sacred oath, friend! In fact, a foreign Emperor has commissioned a colossal five-hundred-tola solid gold statue, and I have selected you as the royal sculptor!

The goldsmith's eyes bulged with uncontrollable greed! A commission of five hundred tolas would make him the wealthiest artisan in the empire!
The Banquet & The Red-Hot Crucible Trial
The next evening, Dhanapala hosted a grand banquet in the merchant guild hall, inviting royal ministers, judges, and guild elders. He placed the sample anklets upon the central table.

Dhanapala announced before all the ministers: *"Before we entrust five hundred tolas of state gold to Master Swarnadatta, let us melt these sample anklets in a glowing crucible before your eyes to prove the flawless purity of his gold!"*

Servants brought a glowing red-hot charcoal furnace and clay crucible! The goldsmith turned white as chalk, breaking into a freezing cold sweat!
*'The moment they melt, the lead and copper will float to the top! I will be branded a royal thief and sent to the gallows!'*
The Public Confession & The Triumph of Justice
Just as the anklets touched the furnace tongs, the terrified goldsmith threw himself at Dhanapala's feet, weeping and confessing the entire theft before all the royal judges!
Mercy, Lord Sreshthi! I confess! I stole twenty-five tolas and stuffed the core with copper! Spare my life before the judges!

To escape the executioner, the goldsmith returned the twenty-five tolas of pure gold along with a massive fine of one hundred extra gold dinars to the guild treasury.

Dhanapala walked out of the hall triumphantly, having recovered his gold without violence, using the liar's own greed as the ultimate trap!
The Fifth Dawn in Chandravati
Back on the moonlit balcony of Chandravati, Shuka concluded his fifth tale with sparkling eloquence.

Prabhavati clapped her hands in delight, marveling at Dhanapala's psychological trap.
What brilliant strategy! He did not scream or accuse—he baited the thief's greed until the thief trapped himself!

Shuka delivered his fifth decisive riddle:
Now tell me, Prabhavati—is it wiser to accept the glittering promises of strangers, or remember that hollow gold always burns in the furnace of truth?

Prabhavati sat on the velvet cushions, debating the nature of false allure with deep introspection.

As she pondered, the eastern sky burst into brilliant amber and gold! The temple conches sounded across Chandravati. The fifth night had vanished!

The streets filled with morning activity. Smiling with profound reverence, Prabhavati unclasped the prince's emerald pendant, handed it to Shuka, and returned peacefully to her chamber—her virtue and lineage preserved for the fifth night!
You have guarded my mind once again, wise Shuka. Rest well, and tonight I shall return for your sixth tale!
Sleep in peace, noble Mistress. When dusk falls, the sixth mystery awaits!
