The Eleventh Night: The Queen's Pet Peacock & The Magic Sticks
The Turquoise Waistband & The Eleventh Night
On the eleventh twilight, the matchmaker slipped into the mansion bearing an ornate golden waistband (*kamarband*) inlaid with turquoise gems sent by Prince Gunashali.
See this royal waistband from the western kings, fair lady! The prince swears you are the jewel of his realm!

Draped in radiant peacock-emerald silk with shimmering gold zari borders, Prabhavati fastened the waistband around her slender waist by candlelight, smiling with vanity.
Tonight, my resolve is steadfast! I shall step through the courtyard doors!

She adjusted her sheer veil and walked with swift, confident steps toward the mansion gate.
Shuka
From his high golden swing, Shuka bowed with dazzling courtly elegance.
May auspicious stars guide your journey, Queen of Charm! The midnight air is fragrant! But tell me...

Prabhavati paused on the threshold, raising an amused eyebrow.
What fresh mystery do you bring tonight, my wise bird? Speak quickly!

Shuka looked deep into her eyes, his ruby beak glinting in the lantern glow:
Go with joy, fair lady! But if a false accusation traps you tonight, do you possess the psychological wit of Minister Sumati and the Magic Sticks when the Queen's sacred peacock was stolen?
Magic sticks solving a royal theft?! How did dry sticks catch the guilty thief?!
The Stolen Peacock & The Royal Wrath
"Hear the tale of psychological truth!" began Shuka. In the imperial palace of Magadha, Queen Padmavati's beloved pet peacock—a magnificent bird with shimmering sapphire and emerald plumage—was stolen from the royal garden pavilion!

The furious King Virabhadra rounded up twelve palace servants, threatening them with torture and dungeon imprisonment unless the thief confessed immediately.
One of you twelve is a royal thief! If the Queen's peacock is not returned by dawn, every single one of you shall be whipped and thrown into the dungeon!

Wise Minister Sumati stepped forward with calm majesty: *"Hold, Your Majesty! Torture forces innocent men to lie out of pain. Allow the sacred Dharma Sticks of Lord Varuna to uncover the real culprit!"*
The Sacred Sticks of Varuna
Before the royal altar, Minister Sumati gave each of the twelve servants an identical, smooth ten-inch carved sandalwood stick.

Sumati proclaimed with solemn spiritual authority:
Sleep with these sticks beneath your pillows tonight! By the divine justice of Lord Varuna, the stick in the hands of the real thief will miraculously grow exactly one inch longer by tomorrow morning!

In the barracks, eleven innocent servants went straight to sleep, knowing their consciences were spotless.
The Thief
In the dark barracks at midnight, the guilty servant tossed and turned in icy sweat, gripped by the terror that his stick would grow an inch and send him to the gallows!

Thinking himself cunning, the thief crept into a shadow, took out a sharp knife, and carefully carved exactly one inch off the end of his stick! *'Now when it grows an inch tonight, it will be the exact same size as the others!'*

The next morning, Minister Sumati aligned all twelve sandalwood sticks against a bronze measuring ruler before the King and court.
The Nine-Inch Stick & Public Confession
Eleven sticks measured exactly ten inches. But the guilty servant's stick was only **NINE INCHES LONG!**

Sumati smiled calmly: *"The sticks never grow. It was your own guilty fear that trimmed your stick and exposed your crime!"* The weeping thief fell to his knees, confessing everything!

The unharmed peacock was safely returned to Queen Padmavati, and the King honored Sumati with a golden necklace for using psychological insight over blind force!
The Eleventh Dawn in Chandravati
Back on the moonlit balcony of Chandravati, Shuka concluded the tale with piercing moral clarity under the starlight.

Prabhavati sat on the velvet bolsters, marveling at the sheer psychological brilliance of the trap.
What delicious irony! The thief's own panic and guilty conscience unmasked him before the world!

Shuka delivered his eleventh decisive riddle:
Now tell me, Prabhavati—is it wiser to think guilt can remain hidden in the dark, or remember that fear of exposure always forces the guilty to betray themselves?

Prabhavati sat in quiet contemplation, realizing that every secret transgression carries the seed of its own inevitable exposure.

As the lesson sank into her soul, golden dawn sunlight flooded the Chandravati skyline! The temple conches sounded across the city. The eleventh night had passed!

Smiling with profound reverence, Prabhavati unclasped the turquoise waistband, placed it beside Shuka's golden swing, and returned peacefully to her bedchamber—her virtue and household saved for the eleventh night!
You have guarded my conscience once again, wise Shuka. Rest peacefully, and tonight I shall return for your twelfth tale!
Rest well, noble Mistress. When dusk falls, the twelfth enigma shall awaken!
