The Sapphire Anklet & The Thirty-Ninth Night
नीलमणि-नूपुर और एकोनचत्वारिंशति रात्रि का शृंगार
On the thirty-ninth twilight, a messenger delivered an ornate silver anklet adorned with tinkling sapphire bells sent to Prabhavati.
Hear the sweet melody of these sapphire bells, noble lady! Tonight's garden dance festival awaits your presence!

Draped in sapphire-blue and silver silk with heavy gold zari borders, Prabhavati fastened the anklet onto her ankle by candlelight, admiring her reflection.
Tonight, my journey cannot be delayed! I shall attend the garden dance!

She adjusted her sheer veil and walked with swift, confident steps toward the mansion gate.
Shuka
शुक का गम्भीर प्रश्न और अन्तर्धान-औषधि का भ्रम
From his high golden swing, Shuka bowed with dazzling courtly elegance.
May auspicious stars illuminate your footsteps, Queen of Charm! The midnight air is fragrant! But tell me...

Prabhavati paused on the threshold, raising an amused eyebrow.
What fresh enigma do you bring tonight on this thirty-ninth night, O wise Shuka?

Shuka looked deep into her eyes, his ruby beak glinting in the lantern glow:
Go with joy, fair lady! But if you believe secret deeds remain hidden from the world tonight, do you possess the investigative wit of Minister Dharmabuddhi when three rogue ascetics claimed an herb made them invisible, attempting to loot the royal treasury?
A magic herb making thieves invisible?! How did the minister catch invisible thieves in a locked vault?!
The Fake Invisibility Herb in Kanyakubja
कान्यकुब्ज के धूर्त संन्यासी और अन्तर्धान-भ्रम
"Hear the comedic unmasking of secret delusions!" began Shuka. In ancient Kanyakubja, three rogue thieves disguised as ash-smeared ascetics found a rare mountain root (*Gudavatika*), claiming it made the user invisible to human eyes!

Placing the bitter root beneath their tongues, they looked at each other with wide grins, fully convinced they had dissolved into thin air like invisible spirits!
We are phantoms now! No mortal eye can see our footsteps!

At midnight, the three 'invisible' rogues strutted openly through the royal palace gates, making silly faces at guards who could see them plain as day in the moonlight!
The Minister

Guards snickered behind pillars, reporting to wise Minister Dharmabuddhi: *"Three ash-smeared fools with weeds in their mouths are tiptoeing into the gold treasury!"*

Dharmabuddhi smiled: *"Play along! Pretend you cannot see them, and let their own arrogant delusion guide them straight into the iron cage vault!"*
Let their own foolish pride be their prison!

In the treasury, the thieves loaded heavy chests of gold coins onto their shoulders, giggling and waving their hands in front of the guards' faces.

Carrying the heavy gold chests, the three rogues marched proudly through what they believed was an open, unguarded palace garden exit.

**CLANG-RRR!** A massive iron portcullis gate dropped from the archway, locking all three thieves securely inside an iron-barred courtyard cage!

Hundreds of palace torches flared to life! Guards, ministers, and courtiers surrounded the cage in a circle, laughing heartily at the trapped thieves.
The Silver Mirror of Truth
दर्पण-दर्शन और अपराध की लज्जा
Minister Dharmabuddhi held up a giant polished silver mirror before the cage, showing the dumbfounded thieves their own fully visible reflections clutching stolen gold!
Behold your 'invisibility', noble phantoms! The entire city has been watching your comedy!

The three rogues spat out the bitter root in burning embarrassment, dropping to their knees and confessing their folly as the gold was safely returned.
The mountain root deceived our minds! We are fools!

The minister proclaimed: *"Nothing is hidden from the all-seeing eye of Dharma! Those who believe their secret misdeeds are invisible walk in the deepest darkness!"*
The Thirty-Ninth Dawn in Chandravati
शुक का एकोनचत्वारिंशति नीति-प्रश्न और प्रभात की जय
Back on the moonlit balcony of Chandravati, Shuka concluded the tale with piercing moral clarity under the starlight.

Prabhavati sat on the velvet bolsters, marveling at how secret transgressions are never hidden, and believing oneself invisible is merely foolish pride.
How sublime! Secret misdeeds are never invisible; thinking oneself hidden is merely the blindness of foolish pride!

Shuka delivered his thirty-ninth decisive riddle:
Now tell me, Prabhavati—is it wiser to believe you can hide secret transgressions in the dark, or walk in the open light of unblemished honor?

Prabhavati sat in quiet introspection, realizing that true honor needs no shadows, shining radiantly in the open light of virtue and truth.

As the lesson illuminated her soul, golden dawn sunlight flooded the Chandravati skyline! The temple conches sounded across the city. The thirty-ninth night had passed!

Smiling with deep reverence, Prabhavati unclasped the sapphire anklet, placed sweet almonds before Shuka's golden swing, and returned peacefully to her bedchamber—her virtue and household protected for the thirty-ninth night!
You have shown me that truth is always visible before Dharma, wise Shuka. Rest peacefully, and tonight I shall return for the fortieth milestone tale!
Rest well, noble Mistress. When dusk falls, the fortieth milestone enigma shall awaken!
