The First Statue: Ratnamanjari & The Wish-Granting Jewel
प्रथम पुतली रत्नमञ्जरी: चिन्तामणि रत्न, दरिद्र पण्डित और परम त्याग का रहस्य
Ratnamanjari
रत्नमञ्जरी का आह्वान और प्रथम सीढ़ी की चेतावनी
In the sandstone palace of Dharanagari on coronation dawn, King Bhoja lifted his right foot toward the first golden step amidst blowing conches, when the first living bronze statue—Ratnamanjari—erupted with celestial golden radiance!
"Halt, King Bhoja! Dare not set foot upon this celestial throne! This is no ordinary seat, but the throne of Dharma bestowed by Lord Indra upon Emperor Vikramaditya!"

Centuries ago in ancient Ujjayini, torrential monsoon rains lashed the dark sandstone alleys as Emperor Vikramaditya wrapped himself in a coarse traveler's woolen cloak, patrolling the city in secret with his Wootz steel blade.

Beside a crumbling thatch hovel at the edge of the city, Vikramaditya paused, hearing the agonized weeping of destitute Sanskrit scholar Pandit Somasharma, whose children shivered from starvation upon dry straw.
"O Gods! My ancestors entrusted to me the sacred verse to the Wish-Granting Chintamani, yet my frail limbs cannot cross the burning desert! My lineage will perish in starvation!"

Deeply moved by the scholar's despair, the disguised Emperor entered the hovel, placing a heavy purse of gold coins at Somasharma's feet to relieve the family's immediate hunger.
"Take heart, noble scholar! So long as Dharma reigns in Ujjayini, no family of learning shall perish in hunger."

With trembling fingers, Somasharma unrolled an ancient birch-bark scroll bearing the Sanskrit verses and cryptic map to the Wish-Granting Chintamani atop Mount Gandhamadana.
"This jewel can banish seven generations of poverty, yet the trail to Gandhamadana is barred by scorching deserts, venomous serpents, and stone demons!"

Placing his hand upon the frail scholar's shoulder, Vikramaditya spoke with unwavering resolve: *"Fear not, venerable Brahmin! I am a soldier of Ujjayini. I shall carry you upon my own shoulders to the summit of Gandhamadana and place the Chintamani into your hands!"*
The Burning Desert & The Thirst Trial
धधकता मरुस्थल और पिपासा की परीक्षा
With the first rays of crimson dawn, Vikramaditya hoisted the frail, elderly scholar onto his broad shoulders and set forth into the treacherous desert wastes.
"Hold tight to my shoulders, scholar! We must cross the first valley before the sun reaches its zenith."

For twelve agonizing days across sand dunes hot as burning coals, Vikramaditya marched without rest; his soles blistered and desert winds parched his throat, yet his countenance remained serene.

In the barren heart of the sands, Somasharma collapsed from heatstroke beneath a withered acacia tree. Unhesitatingly, Vikramaditya poured the last precious drops of water into the scholar's mouth, enduring the burning thirst himself.

Revived by the water, Somasharma wept in profound awe: *"O noble warrior! Enduring tormenting thirst yourself, you gave the last water of life to me! What divinity resides within your mortal heart?"*
"You are no ordinary man, but Dharma incarnate walking upon earth!"

Smiling gently, Vikramaditya replied: *"Drink, brother! A warrior's strength is nourished not by water, but by the sacred vow to protect those who seek refuge!"* On the northern horizon, the jagged obsidian peaks of Gandhamadana loomed.

Leaving the burning desert behind, they entered the jagged sulfurous gorges of Mount Gandhamadana, where noxious fumes rose from fissures and venomous black vipers hissed along the narrow ledges.
The Slaying of the Stone Guardian
पाषाण-राक्षस वज्रदन्त का संहार
Over dizzying precipices and bottomless chasms, Vikramaditya bounded across granite ledges with the scholar bound securely to his back, his footing sure as a mountain leopard.

Suddenly the mountain shuddered as a colossal four-armed stone guardian—demon Vajradanta—awoke from the rock face, brandishing a boulder-mace and roaring: *"No mortal leaves Gandhamadana alive!"*
"The pass of Gandhamadana leads only to the realm of death!"

Gently lowering the trembling scholar behind a granite boulder, Vikramaditya drew his legendary Wootz steel blade, its edge catching the mountain sun with razor sharpness.

The demon swung his massive stone club with mountain-crushing fury, shattering cliff faces into cascading avalanches of rock and dust.

Dodging the crushing blow, Vikramaditya leaped through the air with peerless warrior grace, cleaving the stone mace in twain with a shower of blinding sparks!
"No stone club can halt the unstoppable momentum of Dharma!"

Humbled by the Emperor's invincibility and dharmic aura, the stone guardian bowed before him, parting the granite boulders to reveal the portal to the inner sanctum.
The Icy Whirlpool Abyss & The Chintamani
बर्फीला भँवर और चिंतामणि रत्न की प्राप्ति
Passing the portal, a breathtaking subterranean panorama opened before them: a vast abyssal sapphire lake where an icy whirlpool churned with ferocious power.

From the eye of the whirlpool rose a blinding column of prismatic celestial light—the legendary Wish-Granting Chintamani, pulsing with the power to manifest infinite wealth!
"There it is! The sacred Chintamani of my ancestors!"

Somasharma collapsed on the rocky shore in despair: *"There lies the treasure of my ancestors, yet the water is freezing ice and the vortex is the maw of death! No mortal can survive!"*

Without a second of hesitation, Vikramaditya dove fearlessly into the freezing abyss, plunging into the heart of the swirling vortex to fulfill his sacred promise!
"To honor truth and one's vow is the very breath of a Kshatriya!"

Fighting the crushing pressure of the icy torrent, the Emperor descended to the bedrock floor, grasping the fiery, radiant Chintamani in his warrior fist.

Breaking the surface of the sapphire lake like a blazing solar deity, Vikramaditya emerged holding the divine jewel aloft, illuminating the entire cavern in rainbow glory!
The Gift of Infinite Fortune
चिन्तामणि का सम्पूर्ण दान और परम त्याग
Stepping onto the shore in soaked garments, Vikramaditya placed the universe-coveted Chintamani jewel directly into Somasharma's trembling palms without keeping a single speck of gold for himself!
"Take it, venerable scholar, and return to your home in peace. May your family and future generations never know the sorrow of poverty again."

Gazing at the blazing gem, Somasharma gasped in disbelief: *"O mighty hero! You crossed the desert, crushed the demon, and risked death in the frozen vortex! Do you not claim half—or even a thousand gold coins—for your valor?"*

Vikramaditya smiled with serene grace: *"Venerable Brahmin! The duty of a true Kshatriya is to bring light to the helpless, not to plunder their destiny! This fortune belongs to your ancestors' penance, not to my greed!"*

Just then, the scholar's eyes fell upon the imperial signet ring on Vikramaditya's wet finger, bearing the golden Garuda seal of the Emperor of Ujjayini!
"This... this is the imperial seal of Ujjayini!"

Somasharma cried out in trembling reverence, falling prostrate in the dust: *"O Lord! You are no common soldier, but the Chakravartin Emperor Vikramaditya! Forgive me, O King—I made the sovereign of Aryavarta carry me upon his royal shoulders!"*

Lifting the weeping scholar, Vikramaditya embraced him as a brother: *"Be not ashamed, friend. To serve my people is a king's highest worship."* The Emperor escorted him safely home, where the family lived in perpetual joy.
Ratnamanjari
रत्नमञ्जरी का निर्णय और राजा भोज की विनम्रता
Concluding the tale, living statue Ratnamanjari challenged King Bhoja: *"Now speak, King Bhoja! Have you ever risked your life through fire and flood for a destitute beggar, retrieving infinite fortune and refusing a single coin for yourself?"*
"If such selfless sacrifice dwells within your heart, step upon this first golden step! If not, turn back!"

Hearing the celestial statue's words, King Bhoja lowered his crowned head in profound humility, his royal pride dissolving in the light of Vikramaditya's sacrifice.
"O celestial maiden, I possess no such divine selflessness. I am not yet worthy to ascend this throne."

King Bhoja withdrew his foot from the first step, immediately commanding his royal treasurers to open the grain stores and distribute food, gold, and warm garments to all the poor of Malwa!
"Open the gates of the royal granaries! Let no citizen of Malwa sleep hungry tonight!"

Pleased by King Bhoja's honest humility, Ratnamanjari smiled warmly as her animated glow receded, freezing her once more into silent, sculpted bronze.

Evening conches echoed across the courtyards of Dharanagari as dusk fell. Ratnamanjari grew silent, concluding the first day of Singhasan Battisi.

King Bhoja returned to his inner chambers in quiet contemplation and prayer, awaiting the next sunrise when the second statue, Chitralekha, would awaken to test his worthiness.
