The Second Dawn & Chitralekha
द्वितीय प्रभात और पुतली चित्रलेखा का आह्वान
The second sacred dawn of coronation broke over the magnificent palace of Dharanagari; beneath soaring white marble columns and resonant Vedic chants, King Bhoja approached the second golden step.

As King Bhoja lifted his right foot toward the second step, an ethereal burst of emerald-green and radiant golden luminescence illuminated the entire audience hall!

Celestial bronze statue Chitralekha awakened with sparkling emerald eyes, her animated lips laughing like the chiming of silver bells, freezing Bhoja mid-stride!
"Halt, King Bhoja! Dare not set foot upon this second step! This throne belongs solely to a monarch whose soul is deep as the ocean and utterly selfless as Kamadhenu!"

The assembly fell into breathless silence as King Bhoja bowed with folded hands in profound reverence before the living celestial statue.
"O auspicious Chitralekha! Relate to me the sacred tale of Emperor Vikramaditya's supreme self-sacrifice!"

Raising her sculpted golden lotus, Chitralekha smiled with divine grace and began the immortal chronicle of the ancient emperor.
"Do you possess such fearless self-sacrifice and boundless generosity as Vikramaditya? Hear the harrowing chronicle of that darkest new-moon night!"

Centuries ago in ancient Ujjayini, torrential monsoon rains and howling gales whipped the stone alleys under a starless, obsidian new-moon midnight.
Midnight Ujjayini & The Starving Family

Wrapped in a humble woolen cloak with his razor-sharp Wootz steel blade concealed at his waist, Emperor Vikramaditya traversed the flooded lanes in disguise.

Passing the perimeter of the sacred Mahakala temple, the Emperor halted beside a dilapidated mud hovel where rain poured through the broken thatch.

By the faint flicker of a dying clay lamp, pious Sanskrit scholar Pandit Haridatta wept beside his weeping wife and three young children shivering from starvation.
"O Gods! In this dreadful famine, my lineage is doomed! My innocent children will perish of starvation before my very eyes!"

Haridatta whispered in despair: *"Ancient scriptures say that if a sinless soul offers his supreme sacrifice on the fiery altar of Mahakali in the Mahashmashan, the Goddess dissolves the famine forever!"*
"Yet where do I possess the strength for such a terrifying ordeal? Our fate is only to starve in silence!"

Deeply moved by the family's agony, Vikramaditya entered the hovel, placing a heavy velvet pouch of gold dinars at the scholar's feet to nourish the starving children.
"Dry your tears, venerable scholar! Feed your family and preserve the lives of these children!"

Placing his hand upon the scholar's shoulder, Vikramaditya made his sacred vow: *"I am a warrior of Ujjayini. To deliver your family and eradicate this famine, I shall face the fiery altar of Mahakali myself tonight!"*

Through the roaring thunderstorm, Emperor Vikramaditya walked alone into the vast cremation grounds, where embers from funeral pyres cast eerie crimson reflections upon rain-soaked skulls.

At the heart of the desolate grounds rose the thousand-year-old basalt temple of Goddess Mahakali, shrouded in clouds of sulfurous incense and red sandalwood vapor.

The massive iron gates groaned open. Within the inner sanctum stood the terrifying black-stone manifestation of Mahakali, adorned with garlands of skulls and bearing the trident and sacrificial bowl.

Before the sanctum blazed an enormous sacrificial fire pit with roaring forty-foot flames, beside a bubbling bronze cauldron of scalding oil.
"Om Krim Kalikaye Namah! Truth and Dharma alone are my unbreachable armor."

As Vikramaditya approached the altar, shrieking specters, howling fiends, and venomous serpents swarmed out of the shadows, attempting to shatter his warrior resolve.

Unshaken as a mountain of granite, Vikramaditya entered deep yogic samadhi, chanting sacred Vedic suktas whose radiant spiritual heat incinerated the dark phantoms into nothingness!
The Cosmic Test & The Sovereign

The subterranean stone temple shuddered like an earthquake. From the pitch-black shadows behind the altar, a deafening, supernatural voice boomed through the vaults!
"No gold or beastly offering shall satisfy this sacrificial fire!"

The booming voice proclaimed: *"If you seek to banish the poverty of Brahmin Haridatta and extinguish this famine forever, only the fresh blood of a sinless Emperor's severed head can appease the altar!"*

A serene, transcendent smile graced Vikramaditya's lips; in his heart burned no fear of death, knowing that to lay down his mortal flesh for his people was the supreme fulfillment of Kshatriya Dharma!
"This mortal body must turn to ash one day, but the Dharma of protecting my people is eternal!"

Without an instant's hesitation, Vikramaditya unsheathed his gleaming Wootz steel blade, folding his hands before the altar in final, joyful surrender.

*"O Mother of the Universe! Receive this head at your feet!"* Vikramaditya cried, swinging the razor blade with full warrior might toward his own exposed throat!
"Victory to Mother Bhavani! May my people flourish in peace!"

At the split-second the razor steel touched his skin, a blinding supernova of divine light illuminated the cavernous temple with the radiance of a thousand suns!
The Divine Manifestation & The Eternal Boons

Manifesting in radiant majesty, Goddess Mahakali caught the lethal blade in mid-air with her lotus-soft golden hand, staying the self-sacrifice!

Showers of celestial Parijata blossoms rained from the temple vault, filling the air with divine fragrance as the Goddess looked upon the Emperor with maternal tenderness.
"Blessed are you, Emperor Vikramaditya! Across all three worlds, there exists no sovereign of such selfless compassion and readiness to die for his people!"

The Goddess blessed him: *"Because you offered your crowned head for an unknown destitute scholar, Haridatta's lineage shall brim with inexhaustible wealth for seven generations, and famine shall never darken your realm!"*

Vikramaditya prostrated before the Goddess: *"Mother! Grant only that my soul never strays from the path of Dharma and selfless service to all living beings!"*
"The welfare of my people is my only salvation, O Mother of the Universe!"

Nectar-laden clouds covered the skies of Ujjayini, showering bountiful rain that revived parched barley fields and banished famine forever from the empire.

In Haridatta's cottage, granaries overflowed with golden wheat and silver coins; weeping in overwhelmed devotion, the family blessed the unknown soldier who had saved their lives.
Chitralekha
चित्रलेखा का निर्णय और राजा भोज की विनम्रता
Concluding the tale, living statue Chitralekha looked deeply into King Bhoja's eyes, her voice ringing through the sandstone court:
"Now speak the truth, King Bhoja! Have you ever placed your own neck upon the blade at the altar of Mahakali to save an impoverished subject from famine?"

Hearing the statue's thunderous challenge, King Bhoja lowered his crowned head in profound introspection, his pride dissolving in the light of such supreme self-sacrifice.
"O celestial maiden! I possess no such supreme self-sacrifice. I am not yet worthy to ascend the second step of this throne."

Bowing in reverence, King Bhoja withdrew his foot from the second step, immediately decreeing free statewide community kitchens, emergency grain stores, and dispensaries established across Malwa!
"Let free community granaries open across all districts of Malwa! No subject shall suffer the torment of hunger!"

Pleased by King Bhoja's genuine humility, Chitralekha smiled warmly as her radiant green glow receded, freezing her once more into silent, sculpted bronze.

Evening temple conches echoed across the courtyards as dusk fell. Chitralekha grew silent, concluding the second day of Singhasan Battisi.

King Bhoja returned to his chambers in quiet meditation and prayer, awaiting the third sunrise when the third statue, Chandrakala, would awaken to test his spirit.
